Thoughts From The Townedger-Jan 2020

Already we're a month into the new year.  Time is going way too fast.

The Sanctuary fundraiser for Julie ended up 500 dollars contributed by friends and musicians.  I'm still proud of the fact that those who said they're showed up, most of them did.  Only Steve Black Wolf was too ill to attend. He was missed

Mike Maas was part of the Waubeek Travelers and he and me are facebook friends.  He didn't make much of an effort to hang around with the audience Saturday, but we did say hi and I shook his hand. Mike did say that he only wanted Freddy Jones to help him on stage and I honored his request.  Alas, Ron LaFleur took up the bongos was playing offbeat which didn't please Mike and on the second song he pretty much told Ron where to put the bongos at.  The third song, Mike stopped it and said he couldn't concentrate  due to too much talking and with that, we lost Lorie and Donna Jo.  Ron packed up too, so Relapse ended up being the last band to play.  Jason Clines did play my percussion and I ended up playing the bongos behind the stage on Paint It Black.   Overall, I thought the Benefit went fairly well, but usually when you bring many musicians together for any cause, you're going to deal with some egos and hurt feelings.  On a positive, some of our most Conservative of friends managed to do the most for Julie, that includes Ron, Brenda and Greg Mein, Mike Bear Clair and a couple others.  Patrick Lower had some sort of frustration at the beginning but MJ talked him into staying and running sound.  And Patrick is very good at running sound.  And of course, Mike Maas for performing.

My 59th birthday wasn't much,  I shoveled Julie's driveway and sidewalk as she recovers from Hip Replacement and then went to Salvation Army and found a couple records and CDs, like I usually do on my birthday.  I made the big mistake of telling Ray Larson about my birthday and he broadcast that to anybody in earshot.  Karl Hudson and Jeff Overly sang Happy Birthday and Ray bought me a beer, he wouldn't buy a pepsi.  I saw Craig Erickson play at Iowa Brewing Company and said hi to Tommy Giblin.  And tried one of those Surf Zombie beer.  7.4 percent alcohol but it had a bad aftertaste what I couldn't get rid of and almost burp puked.   Then went to see Mike Serbousek and River City Drifters at Rumors with Tami Soukup.  They sounded like they haven't practiced much as nobody could play Riding The Storm Out.  Steve Buzzy Shepherd is a FB friend but he never did acknowledged me tho.

Julie and me had been a part of each other's life now for almost three years and somehow we managed to last longer than my musician friends out there.  I find that fascinating since our relationship is as platonic as it gets.   I think Julie has a soft spot in her heart of eccentrics and introverts.  Kyle Oyloe was an eccentric but I didn't know him long enough to be an introvert.  Julie did say that they had a 25 year plus friendship and playing in bands together.   Tami's breakup and divorce proceedings could possibly play a role in our friendship but in reality, I'm not looking.

As it stands, I think Blues Rox will be more of a presence around the area.  There is talk about opening for Avery/Crowes Band, which is more blues based than rock.  Brian Bries knows them better than I do.  We'll see if I can convince the guys to do a show at the Sanctuary this summer, or maybe better, opening for It's  A Beautiful Day once things get finalized.  Jim Jacobmeyer has all those 60s acts at his disposal.   It was 2 years ago that Maury Baker jammed with me and others at the Mockingbird, now a memory.    We may try to get a bass player as well, I'll try to convince Russ Swearingen this is the way to go, tho he would have issues to play Free Bird.

Speaking of Russ's cousin Mike, I doubt he'll ever SING again.  Too many Marlboro Menthol and bad peppermint schnapps.

That's it for the monthly get together.

Artisan Sanctuary Benefit For Julie Gordon Jan 2020

Notes: (Photos by Jim Jacobmeyer)

A load of talent played tonight.  For myself, I played on percussion for The Boy Scout Hippies, Meinfield, Phil Bo King and Belinda James.  Dave Bonham helped Julie on two songs and her friend Sara.

(EGADS Reunion:  Greg Mein, R.Smith, Belinda James, Phil Koening)

When Belinda and me play, it is a EGADS reunion of sorts.  Brenda and Greg from Meinfield helped out on Blue Bayou and I Hear You Knocking, before Greg replaced Brenda on Keyboards on Fever, I played guitar and Phil Bo King played percussion.  It was the only song that I played on guitar with.

Mike Bear Clair did come out with his wife to watch a few numbers then had to leave to play in Kick It in Walford.  Russ Swearingen did come out to watch too along with Debbie.

Relapse played for the first time together in over a year.  They're getting back together to play again.

Spinal Tap moments were my vertigo kicking in and I almost fell off the stage.  Then proceeded to spill my tea three times.  I was not amused.

(Brenda and Greg Mein (Meinfield Band), Belinda James, R.Smith playing Blue Bayou)

Freddy Jones and me split a donation of 50 dollars to Julie's cause.   Mike Frederick and Ron LaFleur contributed some things to sell and whatever he sold, he split fifty/fifty for Julie's cause.  He really is a good guy.

Outside of that, I'm proud to say that those who said they would show up to play or watch did. Steve Black Wolf was suffering from Pneumonia and had to cancel.  Brian and Kris Bries had prior commitments.    Thanks to those who showed up.

Blues Rox Debut At The Glass Tap

Last year at this time, I was braving five below temps to play drums for Dreams Of Arcadia at the Dance Mor Ballroom in Swisher.  One of the highlights of 2019, tho the crowd was small.  But then again I'm used to small crowds.

Like last year, we got hit with a fucking  icestorm to go with a snowstorm and I spent two days at home, not wanting to make the trek to anywhere and get stuck in a ditch.  So I missed out on the Four Day Creep Birthday Bash, tho  DJ Hovenstot and Pat Geisland kept the drummer seat warm for Troy Mitchell.  Like last year, we had three straight Ice/snow/Rain storms to fuck things over.  And then cold temps.

But it didn't stop me nor Brian or Kris from not showing up at the Glass Tap in Monticello to play a very spirited four hour long set complete with Kris stealing the show on Voodoo Chile, which took up about 12 minutes.  I think the crowd was so taken back by this version that they all went home soon after.  But even the five people and bartender wanted to hear more songs.  So we messed around with a jump blues number and concluded with a strangled version of Cold Shot.

Again, Kris was the highlight and we both let him have his fun in the spotlight.  Tho, Brian questioned my version of a easy going How Blue Can You Get, I assured him I was still awake.   Besides, after each song I had to push the drums back into their regular spot.  They kept moving.

The Glass Tap owners have been remodeling the place and we came across wooden floors and I got a fucking splinter from a piece of wood before playing but I did managed to take the splinter out.  It was originally was a movie theater. which dates back to 1918. Most recently, it was the former Office Lounge.

The highlights was Kris taking off on guitar leads on the blues songs.  The classic rock songs on the other hand were still a cluttered mess.  We probably need to work on Simple Man or Shooting Star or perhaps myself taking over the vocals to spell Kris.   We may involve a bass player in the future, David Lam, who was there did offer his services.

Crowdwise, I think we did well despite the five above temps and occasional snow flurry in the air, tho by the final set most of have gone home, but we did have a few folk hanging around to support the efforts, including a couple of encores of blues and Stevie Ray Vaughn.    The bartender was so impressed that he offered up another slot for us to play.  March 22nd.

To which I hope the fucking snow and ice will be done by then.

Tommy Bruner-Guitar (all tracks)
Jeff Craft-Keyboards (all tracks)
R.Smith let Steve and Bonnie do all the dirty work on drums
Terry McDowell, Eric Douglas and Dan Johnson-Hosts

There might have been another song but I'm not certain and besides, it's not that important.

Due to icy roads, I forgo going to Stone City to play Rumors on drums.  The snow stayed away till about 8 oclock.

First time I ever jammed with Gary Darling.  He was part of the classic Madness/Akasha band with Tommy and the late Don Timmons on drums.

I'm not sure what the last song was played, but it was some sort of jump blues,  Gary invited me to do a drum solo, which threw me off so I thought of some half assed drum fills.  Guess nobody got the memo that I don't care much for drum solos.

It was on Monday that Neil Peart passed away from brain cancer at age 67.  Neil was the best drummer ever in a rock band but I never put him as one of my influences, simply of the fact that I couldn't copy his drum playing.  He was Keith Moon, Gene Krupa, Ginger Baker and Buddy Rich all in one.  He was untouchable in my book.

Notes:

The Waubeek jam were missing a couple of performers but we all did well and managed to help Kevin on his versions of Solitary Man and I Fought The Law.  First time we ever played together. Also helped Rick Tron his songs of Nights In White Satin, Kyptonite and Twilight Zone,  Guitar Dave played bass.

We love Freddy Jones but the guy was quite high last night and ended up talking way too much and got punched out by some woman and a dude, who both got shown the door soon afterwards.  I actually had the first hour and half off, then played most of the way.  One of the drummers who shows up off and on wanted to help Katy on her songs, but after one song she told him to sit down.  Didn't see him after that.

Sunday-a whole lot of people came out to support Julie and her fundraiser.  While Ron LaFluer lobbied hard for me to help him play drums, Joe Hutchcroft did the honors.  I think he did very well playing drums.  Dave Bonham played bass.

Despite Kevin Burt playing Checkers, we had a full house of musicians and friends.  I got to have Joel McDowell being my bass player for the segment with Dangerous Dan Hartman.  I always looked forward to have him play bass but he's not a fan of Rumors and doesn't come out very often.  Mikey and Jay came up to to play three songs but the song that Jay played, only I had some sort of knowing it a little bit but not enough to keep it interesting.  To combat the dead time, Joel suggested Honky Tonk Woman and All Day And All Of The Night, and he sang them.  Not bad that I rarely play the latter song.

Yes Ryan Paul was there an no he didn't talk to me when he was hugging Lisa Harbit and chatting with Ron.  I think he caught wind of Julie not being too keen about his involvement and tho he was slated to play on our segment, he was no where to be found.  Brook Hoover and Tom Listenbarger also were long gone when their names were called.  Brook didn't stay too long.  But I had a great time chatting with Joel.  I like the way he thinks, wanting to get into the next song as soon as possible.

Julie did a 10 song set with Everlou and I'm always going to have reservations of other bands playing Dreams I'll Never See Again, but they did two Tom Petty songs (much to the disgust of Ry Dawg) and they did cover a few songs I play (Cinnamon Girl, Stop Draggin My Heart Around) but it so nice to see Julie play with a actual full rock band again.  It was her day and her show.  I let her mingle with her friends.

Plus I had to go wish my dad a happy birthday, since he turned 81.  I think he like the card I game him.
