Thoughts From The Townedger-March

It was supposed to be a month full of jams and gigs.  But the Corona V outbreak had put a stop to that.   Blues Rox lost three gigs due to this.  Guess it's better safe than sorry but the music scene is suffering from this.  The strange thing is that this year, I only had two days of being stuck with a minor cold, otherwise this winter has  been my most healthiest in recent memory.  Only health issue I'm having is cold hands. I do swear by B Vitamin Complex, Vitamin C and D and Zinc Orotate.  To which the health store hasn't had any of Zinc O for a while.

When Blues Rox played the Glass Tap for a debut webcast, I wasn't sure if they were going to go through this.  But it did and we managed to get about 1200 folks across the world to tune in.  Which may not be a lot mind you, but if this was a live gig, I would have played to more people yesterday, then in 40 years of playing around the area.  I think the layoff between gigs made things a bit roughshod, but the fun was the last song Voodoo Chile which we let Kris Bries do his thing.   Questions do remain if I should play a bigger role in singing certain songs.  I do my best singing...when I'm playing guitar, playing drums and singing is a whole different chore. It could be done but I would have really compromise my playing to a simple pattern.  If Blues Rox goes by their strengths, it would be a Stevie Ray Vaughn type of power blues rock.  It would be a lot easier just to have Kris wail out on guitar, then us doing the same ole classic rock tunes.

Webcasting is cool but when I finally heard the gig that we did, I found the sound to be quite tinny.  Also confirmed, I do play loud drums. And they were not miked.

Happy birthday to Jane Maxey (3/30).  We grew up together and went to Longfellow School from grades 4-6.  Like most of the cute girls back then, I had a crush on her.  She's born under the same sign as Julie and is as independent as they come.   Which meant she probably have seen through my bullshit and lived life the best way possible.

Happy birthday to Bruce Stanley (3/31) who left us four years ago.  He was the one that sold me my Guild Acoustic that is the one that I play the most when I play acoustic adventures.  He turned me on into off the wall bands, Scruffy The Cat mainly.   Once he died, the pawnshop quit selling CDs.

For the working musician such as my friends Dan Johnson, Tommy Bruner, Terry McDowell and many more, this is where they make their money, their business and not such as a hobby.  They're now talking that April might be another wasted month.  To be honest, that's not what we want, we want to get back to playing again.  Being a legend in my mind musician, I had to seek regular employment outside of music to survive.  I have a contingency plan in place if things get worse.  In the CR Music Scene, I have always been on the outside looking in, an outsider so to speak and has more to do with living in Marion and not getting my name out to play elsewhere once Tyrus/Paraphernalia ended. Shyness and stage fright was a big reason why I dragged my feet for three decades.  Plus I didn't want to do shitty Motley Crud hair metal shit anyway.  I believed that playing my own songs would get me far, which turned out to be a fantasy.  The guys in Tyrus/Paraphernalia didn't want to play originals and to be honest, my songs were not cut out for them.  At that time, I thrill myself to play songs that I could play out in the car.   Dennis Lancaster was not of a fan of what I wrote, but he did give me a set of lyrics and Love Like Backfire was the result.   The odd thing was that when he and Russ gave the green light to my songs, they were the throwaways of the album. Cocaine Train would have been forgotten had Russ n Dennis rewrote the riffs.

Tyrus/Paraphernalia had their time back in the 80s but Dennis is not interested or getting back together, he lives in Arizona, flies for a major airline and is living the good life going to the islands. I think we have gotten further apart as time goes on.  I think he was the bridge between Open Highway and Tyrus coming together.  He was an average guitar player but he was the most reliable of the band members.  One of his sons Joseph plays bass, or at least he did.   Sometimes I wished I could have a son or daughter that could play music.  But that will never come true for me.  Too late to start now.

Looks like our gigs in April are not going to happen.  So I guess it's time to record some new music and see what happens.  Stay safe everybody and wash your hands.

Notes:

Blues Rox was the debut of something called the Quarantine Sessions, an idea to bring a live gig and put it on webcast, since bars could not have people in bars due to the Corona 19 virus.  Rocky Smith did stop by later after I was putting the drums away to see how things went.

I think we had like 1,102 people who managed to tune in to hear the set list.  Which is more than all of the crowds I ever played in 35 years of playing.   We haven't played live since Jan 19th, which was at the Glass Tap in Monticello.  Kristopher did a pretty good job considering the long layoff but of course the highlight was concluding things with ten minutes of Voodoo Chile to end the show.  Special thanks to Matt and Krystina for their hard work and dedication to our musical adventures.  I'm sure we'll all do it again real soon.

It was noted that our Amana private party was canceled as well.

Matt actually found some old movie posters of when The Glass Tap was the Princess Theater back in the early 40s.  Certainly, there's more to this place as a theater but I have yet to find that on the internet.

Brian's wife actually made up some Blues Rox T Shirts.  I do believe I'm part of the band now.

For today's session, I used the 13 inch  Zildjian K (made in Turkey) splash and the 14 inch K Dark Crash cymbals, I don't usually go with small cymbals but I didn't dig deep in the cymbal bag and I pulled these ones out instead of the usual bigger cymbals.  Smaller cymbals don't overpower like the power and rock crashes that I no longer use.  At the same time I didn't use the 18 inch K Dark Crash that I bought last month.  Since it was going to rain, I decided on using what was available to me.  The 13 inch K splash cymbal was brought in 1984 at Siegels in downtown Cedar Rapids, and they had  I think a 10 inch pair of hi hats made from Turkey, real imported Zildjian cymbals.  This cymbal had a hairline crack around the crown (it was there when I bought it) but it was used when Tyrus-Paraphernalia played the OK Lounge in Marion on 12/7/84.  So that cymbal, along with the Pearl Snare had a direct connection to the past.  I can't say if I will continue using those cymbals, I tend to experiment with all at my disposal, but as far as I know, they fit with the sound.

A Message From The Townedger About the Corona Virus

As expected the upcoming jams and gigs with Blues Rox were canceled due to the Corona virus outbreak.  We had a couple co workers who had roommates and daughters that were infected. Thankfully they stayed home this week.   When Julie played Friday Night at Rumors, she was battling her own illness of the flu and laryngitis.  It came to the conclusion that we needed to social distance from each other.  I really didn't want her cold so I quarantined myself from her till April.  I have also decided that I needed a break from Facebook at well, so I will not be posting anything from now till April.

As a precaution, I told Brian of Blues Rox of the situation at work and decided to put off getting together for at least another week.

I have suspended playing in the Acoustic Adventures for the rest of the month, just to distance myself from anybody who might be sick.  They might have allergies or the common cold or sinus issues, not necessary the Corona 19 bug.   The Artisan Sanctuary might have a open mic Thursday Night but chances are I will not be there.  Unless I cover up with a mask.

All of the bars that have live music have suspended from orders from our wonderful Governor, Gov. Kim Drunk Reynolds.   We are not the only state that has closed the bars and food places to eat at.  Given the situation that happened at The Long Branch to which the DJ ended up with the dreaded virus.  The Long Branch is not to blame for this, but this was the reason the state of emergency was given.   This means no music from Parlor City, Rumors, Stone City General Store, Otis Tailgators, JA Tap and the Glass Tap, plus FB Company, which is basically the bars I play at.  This will remain in effect till April 1.

The Corona Virus is no different than the common cold, a more mutated version mind you.  It was worse for me last year when I got nailed most of the year with Bronchitis and walking Pneumonia. Except for a couple days of a sore throat and runny nose, I have managed to stay healthy.  In fact I have never felt better than I have today.  I cannot recall a winter that I didn't get nailed with something (2012 maybe)   I'm counting my blessings with plenty of vitamins and zinc orotale, thanks to Julie for suggesting that.

With our workload at work, cut in half, it looks like the next few weeks, I can start working on the new album, the first since Logic N Lies.  It will goes as a solo album  (at the moment) but I reserve the right to call it The Townedgers.

In the meantime, if you're sick stay home, if you're working, wear protective glasses, wash your hands and limit your contact with other people till this blows over.  And for Fuck's sake quit hoarding the fucking toilet paper people.

On behalf of myself, Blues Rox (Brian n Kris)  The Egads! (Belinda James) The New Paraphernalia Band (Russ Swearingen, John Field) and Acousta Crabbys (Julie Gordon), we hope and pray things will return to normal so we can play again.

Thank you and Goodnight.

Julie Gordon with Truth Band-Rumors Friday Night  She works great with a rocking band.  Plus I think it keeps her happy.

Notes:

The Truth Band debuted at Rumors Friday Night, which I caught the last set.  Franklin was in the car and I got to say hi to him and he came inside the bar for a few seconds.  Julie never seems to like to have her picture taken but I do think Donna Jo took a nice shot of her.

Me N Julie.

Saturday:  Three inches of snow, which all melted by the end of the day as I made my way to Whittier to play the showcase.  Despite the Corona virus scare we had a good turnout.  Sunday, I decided to do Rumor's first then off to Stone City.  A pretty much laidback and easy rock n blues from Al, with Billy Bourbon playing bass and Tommy on guitar.  I enjoy backing Al up on his songs, we let him do his thing and then we all come in.  We love Al for being the direct link to the past.  He has a funny sense of humor

I finished the night at Stone City. Terry McCauley was there so I had to surprise him by playing songs that I didn't need a song book to.  With him in the crowd, I got some of the best applause in my five songs of note, plus the shortest Alice Restaurant Massacre version ever.  Unlike the picture above I did bring my hat and glasses and dressed up for the occasion.

It was announced that all the bars would be closed down till April.  Which meant the upcoming gigs with Blues Rox are canceled.   The Corona Virus is real, a local DJ playing at the Long Branch contracted that two days later.  So looks like the next two weeks might be the perfect time to finally do that long promised album, three years after Logic N Lies.

Waubeek/Stone City: The Corona Virus And You

FB Company Waubeek Jam

With
Ground Chuck And The Sirloin Burgers
Lenny Drake
Blues Rox
Meinfield
Jay Devore And Mikey Frederick
Captain Kirksey
Katy Merifield
David Lam
Nelson Borden

Notes:

Russ Swearingen made his way to Waubeek and check out the jam  He stayed for an hour.  As much I was trying to get him upstage to play bass he declined.  I'll keep working on him.

Despite losing an hour of sleep, I was kept busy being the only drummer providing beats to varying performers.  Highlights were Blues Rox and Meinfield keeping people dancing.  The version of The Weight everybody was singing to the chorus.  I always thought Brenda and Greg have done the best version of that song.  I try not to post the whole song list of everybody.  Playing for four hours I tend to space off on the lesser known songs.  I do think that Meinfield did the most followed by Jay and Mikey.

Maki only did Wearing a Dead Man's Shirt for his set.  We stretched it out to about 10 minutes playing the Bo Diddley Beat.

Rick Tron did three songs tho his version of Light My Fire he had trouble doing the introduction.  Twilight Zone went on forever but he's doing better playing that song.

I know Jay is the only person doing  You Can Have The Crown from Sturgil Simpson.  Picture is a Jamey Johnson song that is played at various jams too but I haven't heard his version and went for a very slow paced beat.  While the waitress was trying to shut the lights off, he finished with Wagon Wheel.  Despite my reservations of that song, it worked as a finale.

Next month, Blues Rox and me will be heading off to Amana for a private party, so I will be taking a break from the Waubeek jam.  Unless we finish up early and I can get back to Waubeek before closing.  I know playing Amana for two hours will not be as exhausting as the four hour marathon that is Waubeek Jam.  Unlike Rumors, we don't have many drummers playing.  Much to my chagrin.

Meinfield made a visit to Waubeek tonight. Always a good time! Tonight’s lineup:
Goin’ up the country - Canned Heat (by request)
Jackson - Johnny & June
Don’t Go Breaking My Heart - Elton John & Kiki Dee
It’s Too Late - Carole King
Lyin’ Eyes - Eagles
Because the Night - Patti Smith

And a really fun jam version of Wearing a Dead Man’s Shirt with Maki Dervo & friends

(Notes From The Underground:  Bill Bourbon, Billy McGomery, Tom Berdo, Roger Keifer and Dan Hartman)
Stacia Roccio: Photo Credit)

A beautiful day to go walking, so I took advantage of that and did ran around Anamosa and the football stadium and the track field.   I figured Bubba would still be setting things up.   And I was right.  Actually the set went according to plan, no big surprises.  Not a lot of jammers there so I got to add a few more songs than usual.  Could have played more but decided to go to Rumors.

The majority of folks was there.  Billy Bourbon gave me a couple of his CDs to listen to.  Tom Berdo and Notes From The Underground were there playing a few songs, maybe I'll get to know the name of the bass player soon.  Bird and me exchanged Elbow pumps, and I shook hands with a probably a few too many and did wash my hands   Terry was nice enough to offer me to finish up the jam but, I didn't feel like playing after doing four hours of that last night. So I passed this week of playing.   It was Tim Kauffman's birthday.  They did have five other drummers up there so I was there for support.    Tim Canfield did play bass.  I think we drafted him into playing.  Donna Jo followed me up from Stone City.

Kimberly is focusing more on her latest band project.  She wasn't present for the Stone City acoustic set.

There was a bit of paranoia over the Corona Virus tho the Notes Bass player was drinking a Corona.  Brenda was over the edge about that, freaking out as I said goodbye to her.  In the on again off again situation, she was talkative at first but then freaked out that I went around saying hello to fellow musicians and friends.  I just tipped my hat and went on my merry way.  If anybody should get stuck with the Corona Virus, that would be her.  Hypocrite bitch.

The good Brenda (who plays in Meinfield) went motorcycling with Greg.  It was a nice day to do that.   As always Brenda and Greg are fun to jam with.  I hope we can get together again real soon to play again.

I had a good time catching with the guys from Notes/Underground.  Tom Berdo has Billy Bourbon filling in on a couple dates and I told him about Dave Bonham being interested of being the guitar player.  Tom mentioned a guy from guitar center Bill will be giving  a tryout.  Since Dave is based out of Anamosa anymore I doubt he would commit a long drive to North Liberty to help them  out.   Dave has basically moved his jamming appearances to The Blu Room in Dubuque the past couple times.  Rocky Smith has helped him on drums up there.  I asked about the Blu Room Jam and he stated lots of jammers show up but the drums they provide sucked.  At least me and Terry keep ours tuned when we do jams.  Dave did managed to pick up a Wednesday Acoustic gig at the downtown Anamosa Mexician place.  Hope he does well.  For the most part I did talk briefly to the Notes guys about Kevin Wymer's exit from the band.  I'm sure Kevin will do well in Full Circle.  The Notes will find a decent guitar player.

We all know that we get tired and cranky of playing and threaten to quit but as long as we're still alive we continue to play.  Maki did compliment me about sticking to playing guitar on acoustic jams.  I'm not done with Waubeek by any means.  I'll be back for sure.

The Corona Virus has canceled the SXSW festival in Austin and even up here is causing hysteria (as the case in point from Ms. Snow).  My problem this year has been the sneezing and post nasal drip, but compared to last year this is no big deal.  Vitamins and lots of Zinc and "ahem" hand washing seems to have worked wonders but I hope I don't curse myself of getting any sort of flu and cold bug.  It's not going to make stay at home and barricade myself. I have bargain hunts to plan and go to, I have jams and gigs as well.  It seems like mass media will hype up each and every thing out there.  Perhaps Fist and elbow pumps are the way to go.  I can't even get close to Julie due to this.  So I have to take care and fend for myself.  To which I'm going to wash my jacket and clothes since they were out in the public at Rumors tonight.  God forbid if I should infect somebody with Corona 19 Virus.

Artisan Sanctuary: To All The Girls That I Loved

Setlist:

Ain't No Sunshine
Jayne
Dear Lisa
Logic And Lies
Teri My Love

(Jeff Allen: Photo)

Notes:

I suppose if you do only original songs that people won't notice your mistakes.   And maybe I should have stayed home.  I had a major sneezefest this afternoon, 20 times in a two hour span, so I upped the allergy meds and popped a couple of Daytime cold meds and a couple of decongestants and took an two hour nap.  I should have stayed home but chose to go out and see Dave Bonham's final performance (he says) at Ramsey's with Donna Jo, Sharon and Steve Black Wolf on stage.  I opted to stay in the crowd which wasn't much.  But I stayed to see Dave and company till about 8 30 then make my way to the Sanctuary to play.

I can see why Dave is frustrated, nobody shows up and you're obligated to wing it.  Which having Steve Black Wolf to help out worked wonders.  While Dave has promised this was the last show, I told him about Notes From The Underground needed a new guitar player and he would contact Tom Berdo.  Kevin Wymer's departure is hard to explain but I think Kevin wanted to be more with Full Circle.  Kevin did try to recruit me for Full Circle but I decided against that.  I do remember Kevin was very disappointed in my decision, thinking I was wasting my talent not playing for them.  I do know Full Circle goes through a lot of drummers, I'd love to jam with John Hernandez and Kevin, but I would have issues with Vic.

If Dave wanted me to play he would have asked me.  I'm not about to crash the stage unless they want me to play.

Still half crocked on allergy meds and congestion, I stumbled through five songs, which shared a strange theme, they were all about women and Ain't No Sunshine led things off.  First time I ever sang it.  Also Jayne made a rare appearance for songs too. Tho I bought my notebook I didn't use it and fumbled through all of the songs except Logic And Lies.  Since Lisa had her birthday on Friday I thought I would sing her song.  Who was I singing about in Ain't No Sunshine?  I'm not telling. It was nice that everybody thought I did a great job despite my shortcomings but in my case, I wasn't 100 percent, and battled a constant steady flow of gas problems through my set.  But I must be doing something right to not let everybody know I was messing up on songs.  A desperate and deceptive set of music from the Acoustic Adventures of R. Smith.

Morris was there and paired up with Freddy Jones for a few meandering songs.  I missed Jeff Allen's act and a couple others.  Only Big Daddy Kahl had the best set.

Afterwards, I picked up a gig subbing for the Boy Scout Hippies' drummer June 27th in Marion at a private wedding party.  Ron has been very good of paying me the quoted price in previous gigs and if this comes true, it will be the first time I ever played with the BSH without walking Pneumonia (can't spell that fucking name half the time).

Jim had a showcase at the Cedar Rapids Library and everybody except me was there.  Even Julie popped up to play some good music.  For the Sanctuary, I was in for Julie who is still battling her own flu.  With Julie's new band The Truth (formerly Everlou) she mentioned that their regular drummer may have to bow out due to a torn bicep and may need another.  To which I named off a few replacements but also told her if the band is extreme need of a replacement, I could help out.  I doubt that she'll consider me (especially in April/May) but at least I offered.   Perhaps I should consider going to days and then have the nights off to go jam or play.

I might rival Terry in how many bands that I can play in.

Stone City General Store: Early Set (Acoustic Adventures)

Songs:

Fox On The Run
Good Time Charlie
Handy Man
Go Out And Get It
Logic And Lies
Cinnamon Girl

Notes:

A nice day and it bought out the crowd at Stone City for my first showing in about a month.  Couldn't find the right riff to Willin, so it became Good Time Charlie by default.  Donna Jo and Sharon were there along with Ray Larson, Bill Schlatter, Guy Peterson, Ed Butler, Ken Becicka, and usual folk.  Bubs Johannes hosted.

For the night matinee, I joined the Rumors crowd.  8 Drummers last week, only I showed up to play the last set.  Brent Sorenson was there with his friend Jesse Hacker who did four decent songs of note.   Skeeter Louis did a rare solo vocal shot at the end.  Mark Awad replaced Bird on my set of songs.

I did reserved some songs in case Kim Trevillion showed up, but she was at Rumors with a new project with Terry McDowell and Stacia Roccio helping out.  Perhaps next week, she'll be at Stone City and we can plan accordingly.
