Artisan Sanctuary Set List 5/31/18

Songs:

One Track Mind
Baby Wanna Dance
All Over Now
Ever So Much

With:
Jim Jacobmeyer
M.J.
Patrick Lower
Allen McGrew
Shawn Ster
Phil Bo King
Glen Gardner
Darryl Hokanson
Phil Thomas
Stu Pershing

Notes:  It was the first time I played at the Artisan Sanctuary in three months.  This time out, I only did originals from Town's Edge Rock.  Kind of a kick off to celebrating the 35th anniversary of that album that came out in June of 83.  Time has really been passing.

Shawn told the crowd that he has been sober from booze for six months now.  Congratulations brother!  He tried to do a You Tube version of Drift Away but the video didn't turn out well.  He attempted a second try as I was heading home.

It was one of the bigger jam crowd there in a while.  Glen is fast becoming a regular there and the duo of Darryl and Phil as regulars should help the Sanctuary's jam big time over the summer.

Glen wanted to do a version of Everybody's Talking but since we had a lot of jammers we were limited to four songs and he did other songs instead.

Stuart didn't have a very good night.  He attempted to do Crazy Circles from Bad Company but couldn't find the right key to play it, He rebounded to do  All I Can Do Is Write About It but ended with LA Freeway.  He had good songs but sometimes you will have nights that things will not click.

Darryl and Phil did six songs, two from Tom Paxton, My Ramblin Boy and The Last Thing On My Mind.

Phil Bo King took the early slot and went home after Shawn's set.  Allen McGrew brought two guitars worth eight thousand dollars but he didn't play any songs.

I'll be playing on the kick off to the Freedom Festival in Marion on the 23rd of June with a few of my Artisan Sanctuary friends, with me playing at 2 PM.  It will probably be a solo act.  I might run the idea off to Julie if she wants to join in on the fun with Dave or Ryan in tow.   Jim mentioned that this will be a paying job (YAY!). I'll be granted to play a half hour set, maybe even longer if Julie is part of the equation or if she decides to go with Dreams Of Arcadia or Guitar Dave.   Julie makes anything sound much better.

Checker's Acoustic Showcase 5/30/18

Songs: (Solo)

Dead Flowers
Every Mother's Son
Six Days On The Road
Rock Me Baby Blues
Switch Board Susan
She Belongs To Me/Let The Four Winds Blow

Steve Black Wolf sings on Turn The Page and played guitar
Sofia Chesney Sang
Glen Gardner played guitar and sang
Dave Bonham played guitar and sang
Julie Gordon sang and took videos
Carl Meiners played and sing
Mikey Fredericks played banjo
Donna Jo Eisner sang and played percussion
Adam Dinsdale-Played some electric guitar and went home after I took the stage.
The guy that played cello, I forgot the name and will have to look it up in the archives.
Skip Richards showed up
Rusty sang on the second version of Turn The Page
Rick Krejci and DJ Hovenstat showed up for support
I played guitar and sang.

This is the first of five straight days of jams and playing guitar and it didn't exactly started out on the right note.  We had Adam playing electric guitar and somehow he didn't fit into the format.  I was surprised he was down at Checkers' rather than the Silver Star Saloon's Bacon Jam where he could play guitar.  I could have used him on my set by while playing Dead Flowers he was actually putting his guitar and amp away.  Another reason why I did Rock Me Baby as a blues, thinking he was going to jam with me.  That didn't happen.

It was Sofia's birthday and she was a duet partner with Steve on a couple songs.  Steve shocked us by playing Don't Bogard That Joint (!), a song I have messed around and did nothing with. There was another song I did with Steve singing but dammed if I know which one.

Dead Flowers was requested by Brooksie.  So I decided to do that one.

Let The Four Winds Blow was tacked on at the end of She Belongs To Me.

Beforehand, Julie convinced me to try acupuncture in a attempt to get over the back spasms and it did seem to help.  I didn't do any favors trying to help Dave move some speakers into the car so I probably will be paying for that tomorrow.

Skip showed up but didn't play bass.

Light My Fire/Free Form Funk in C

With
Russ Swearingen
Debbie Swearingen
Shawn McDonald

Notes;  It was 97 degrees today. A record and the sun was hot.  The Paraphernalia Jam was me and Russ watching the Indy 500 to which Will Power won.  With Dewayne in rehab, John's mind was in Missouri and his body here in Iowa and Mike staying at home and playing Vegas slots on the computer and like the old days it just me and Russ wasting time watching TV.

I was slated to go to Mount Auburn for Mike Clair's Bar B Q and Blues party but I didn't write the address down and decided just to stay in town.  I eventually would meet Russ up at the Mexican place for supper and off to Otis Tailgators' for their jam.  I know we really don't do much things together, he has golf to play and I play in other jams.  But it was great to run into Russ, Deb and Shawn at the restaurant.

The Otis Tailgator's Jam had Trevor playing drums and it was a free form set of songs.  Not one of my best but then again I didn't have much help on the accompaniments from the other players, namely the guitar player who kept going into a different key and feel on the songs that I did.  With this Magic Bus was attempted and then aborted.  Light My Fire suffered from the same fate.  Trevor did managed to keep the beat before soloing into something different and the guitar player  going into somewhere else.  Sulfur Queen was thought up on the spot as I made up the words and just rolled my eyes at the free form spinning into a train-wreck. But at least we had fun.   I think.  I'm all for going on taking the music elsewhere but if you don't know the song or don't want to follow, then the songs sound like shit.  Julie was spared from this.  I think she had practice with Dave on the forthcoming Checker's jam.  Russ opted not to play this time out.

The Rumors jam was better although I was saddled into doing Wonderful Tonight with Ross singing it and the insufferable Maragartiaville but once that got out of the way, I ended up playing on a spirited Dirty Water and Tommy wanting me to slow down the beat on Superstition.  I tend to play it too fast for his liking.  A pretty good crowd and Rob had a nice Ludwig with a complete Zildjian Dark Crash cymbals and high hats.  I tended to like his Ping Ride the best.   It's funny how Rob always forgets my name when he talks to me.  I tell him it's same as yours, mine ends with a D your ends with an A.

Dan Hartman joined on the Rumors jam after ending the Cooters jam earlier.  Black The Sun was playing outdoors at CRL.  When I walked down there, they were on break it seems, so I didn't hang long.  As far as I know, Herman did go back up to play an encore but Terry Lint didn't play drums.

Since it was Memorial Day weekend, there weren't much crowd action elsewhere.  As far as I know I was the only jammer at Otis Tailgators' and went home early after my "performance"  Needless to say it was a very interesting experience and I wish them all well to make it a success in future jams.   Hopefully next time a little more substance and knowing the songs that I do play would help greatly too.

I should be back on the Stone City jam circuit next Sunday.

(Bird, Crabby and Greg Mein-Silver Star Bacon Jam 5/23/18)

Notes; I know I did ten songs with Greg and another one with Tommy and Bird but I can't for the life of me remember them.

It was the first time that I partaken the Bacon Jam, basically to celebrate Terry's birthday. He's been doing a fine job hosting the jams around town and for a birthday gift I gave him a good pair of drumsticks.  Not a lot of jammers were there, Ed was there and of course he brought some of his more interesting songs selections, Sweet Jane, Ode To Billy Joe, Dyer Maker and Come Together (two of those songs are part of my songs when I play, guess which ones), Steve Stratton played a speed metal version of Dyer Maker which kinda fit the eccentric sounds of Ed Butler.

I finally got to have bacon after playing a long set of songs, and I loved the acoustics of the Silver Star Saloon and how Terry's snare sounded pretty good.  I thought that Greg was going to do The Weight but he ended up playing Shooting Star instead.  If Greg and Brenda ever started their own band I'd be happy to join their cause.

Somebody baked something called Bacon Brownies, which was Brownies sprinkled with bacon.  It was kinda rich tasting but they were quite good.  But I could only eat one though.

I also got to jam with Bird, who is part of Rare Earth, and they'll be touring a few dates in the summer but he's been very much part of the jam scene around the area.  I wasn't familiar with Tube Snake Boogie (it's one of those songs I never played live and Eyes On You was another surprise that was basically blues based.  The version of Ain't No Sunshine was more blues than Bill Withers but that's okay.  Tommy really did some great lead guitar work on Gimme Shelter and especially on Can't Find My Way Back Home, the Blind Faith song that left me searching in how to play it but eventually I found the right groove.

My co worker Kathy Runnels was in the house so I hung around with her till I went to Checkers' to visit and help out Cathy and Lorie and played congas for a while and then did a few songs.  I kinda did a medley of sorts starting with Light My Fire and messing around with U Can't Touch This before returning back to Light My Fire and into For What It's Worth.   Lorie Parker helped out on congas and backing vocals.  I had to deal with a bad plug in which kept shorting out during my performance. My Stone City buddies were there and I helped on congas on Steve Black Wolf's songs.  Glen Gardner played lead guitar.

I figured this would happen but the Chrome Horse on Blairs Ferry is no longer booking bands and musicians to play there, everything is now resorted back to the new Chrome Horse in New Bo.  The Blairs Ferry location has always a graveyard for previous drinking establishments and former bars in that building.  Questions remains if the Chrome Horse will be hanging around in the new area since the previous three bars that were there before the Chrome Horse New Bo went belly up. Could it be the high rent?  It's hard to tell but with summer rolling around, there'll be plenty of outdoor events coming up.  I'll do my best to frequent them and support the bands, but I also have to support my own band's (and Julie's)  efforts as well.  Can't be everywhere at once.

And the Marion Salvation Army is closing their doors.  Probably having something to do with the new hotel going up in that area and the rent being raised up I'm sure.  I've spent many a time sorting through CDs and LPs and finding 45s once in a great while and donated some things along the way too.  Steve Willard complained that the place was always dirty and smelly too but it kinda felt like home to me.   The way it goes it seems.  Another part of my life gone for the ages.

There was hope that this weekend the original Paraphernalia/Tyrus band would be getting together but so far, no word from Mike if he's wanting to do it.  But now I got word that Dewayne won't be able to play this weekend since he's going to an inpatient treatment for alcoholism.   I hope for the best in Dewayne that he'll be able to beat the demon alcohol and be around to watch his grand kids grow up.  And hopefully we can get together and play songs just we did back in the old days.

From Dewayne Schminkey:

I will be checking into ASAC tomorrow at 1:00 PM for in patient treatment for alcoholism. Will be there for 30 days. Gonna miss my family, friends and my 2 sweet little Grandson's.

(Photo: Julie Gordon)

Notes:  A rare occasion that John Shaw comes down to jam.  But he was there.

Glen Gardner played two songs that would be heard later.  Time After Time, to which Ed would reprise later and Make It With You.  John Shaw would do that one later on as well.

The Riverbottom Ramblers did a half hour set of bluegrass and gospel numbers.
Rocky arrived later and mention he was at Terry's birthday party Jam Part 1 (Part 2 is the Bacon Jam at Silver Star Wednesday Night and a few drummers were there.  Since I had a  date night with Julie in town last night  I opted to stay close to home and finish up laundry.  She was busy gardening.  I tend to stay out of the way when she gardens.  I'm more in the way than I help.

I basically did songs that I knew the words to and didn't need the song book although I did bring it.  I was kinda feeling tired and out of it today due to a cool and cloudy weather.  Tried working on Cuts Like A Knife and The Race Is On but since it's been a while since I did Light My Fire forgot the damn chorus chords.  So that took a back seat.  Everybody's Talking and Logic And Lies are now automatic for me to remember the words anyway.   Took a nap before the acoustic jam and just stuck to the songs I can remember the words.   I really need to learn new stuff (or old originals).

The above photo is me at the Class Act.  Julie scored a 75 dollar gift card after she wasn't too thrilled with the service when we first went out and they responded with a gift card .  She had a nice black dress on, I put on a Doors T Shirt.  Since my place of employment was too damn cheap to acknowledge my thirty years there, I ended up having a steak dinner.  I do have to say that The Class Act did a fine job this time around, the food was good.  Of course with a 32 dollar ribeye steak dinner and a 20 dollar Potebello Mushroom Steak dinner and the full works of appetizers and dessert we ate good.  And it didn't come back to haunt me later either.

I noticed that the Rumors Jam, that The Letter has been played a bit more often than it used to. Perhaps Tommy who was with us when we did that song at Parlor City last month suggested it to the boys and that's fine.  Songs are meant to be shared.   I'd say go for it.

Finally, it was one year ago that Julie And The Mad Dogs played Rumors and I was there after getting off work.  I think I did Highway To Hell along with Johnny B Goode and I had fun hanging out with the band and Julie, and hanging around to help her pack on the load out. I was more in the way than actually helped but somehow along the way Julie had this notion of wanting to go out on a date.  In fact, she actually wondered if I was going to ask her out.   I hadn't dated in five and a half years and  I didn't think I was what she was looking for in dating material.  I didn't think I was the right guy for her.  So I thought okay, we can go out and do something.  Turns out, she actually asked me out on Memorial Day and we went to see a movie and had the worst supper ever.  Chiploate  closed up at six and we were scrambling for something to eat at, and settled for Taco Bell, which the food sucked.  The movie wasn't much better but somehow we had a nice time throughout the false starts and bad traffic and food.  And continue to play together on stage and gotten to know each other better.  She's continues to be a part of my music life and social life.  Franklin, her doggie loves me, and the cats tolerate me.

I've been back on the circuit for almost 3 years now and I've managed to play with the best musicians in town and started projects with other musicians and I sat in on drums on a couple bands but never ever thought that  my favorite singer in town wanted to be a part of my life.  In the end she did steal my heart away.

Checker's Jam 5/16/18

Since I was stuck at work, celebrating my 30th anniversary, The Checker's Acoustic Jam with Julie and Dave continued on.  With the Bacon Jam going on over at Silver Star Saloon, people have to pick and choose which one to go to.  I find myself more inclined to continue to support the efforts of Julie as well as Cathy and Lorie on alternative Wednesday Nights as I continue to go more in playing guitar and singing my own songs.   It's true that the paying music scene isn't what it used to be but in my case it never happened much, if at all.  But just about any night, there's a jam taking place. Even on Monday Nights, the Mill in Iowa City has a acoustic jam.  Maybe some day I'll take part in that.

I couldn't make it, and I'm sure there wasn't many folks there but I do know that the ones who showed up gave their best to support the efforts of Julie and Dave.   I will acknowledge Terry's jams and support him by letting the music world know about The Bacon Jam or Wess Side Jam at Rumors, but Julie's efforts come first.   As well as Cathy and Lorie's jam night as well.  The Acousta Kitties, all three of them convinced me to play guitar and sing.

This week the jams have to take a backseat to work,  The Artisan Sanctuary Thursday Night jam.  Julie and Ryan play Ramsey's Thursday Night that I can't make either.   As for Sunday, I'm not sure where the road leads.

In the meantime, in my absence the gang got together and sang on a few songs, namely Suite: Judy Blue Eyes.  From left to right, it's Steve Black Wolf, Dave Bonham, Glen Gardner, Julie Gordon and Donna Jo Eisner on stage.   I thought I give them a shout out.

The next night Dreams Of Arcadia played an almost three hour set with no breaks.  This is what Julie lives for, to play and rock on till it's quitting time.  And still keep going.

Other things (The Tyrus/Paraphernalia rumored reunions)

It was 3 years ago at my ex high school sweetheart's reception that most of the guys from Tyrus/Paraphernalia came together for one night.  Which became the catalyst for me to return back to the music scene.  Usually our lead singer Mike will complain about not being invited, or didn't know about it.  Fact was Dennis was passing through town and did get the word out via Facebook.  My guess was Mike was doing Karaoke, probably at Checkers.  But he was invited.

For the Paraphernalia reunion. Russ was always a part of that band, which is easier to say it's a better chance for a band reunion rather than Tyrus, which is me, Russ, Mike, and Dennis.  Dennis flies now and hasn't played guitar in over 20 years.  Will Sigsbee was part of Tyrus but he's now CEO up in Minnesota and we haven't kept touch since bouncing him from the band in summer of 1984.  Shawn Ster was guest star, but I have actually kept in better touch with him during my acoustic guitar jams at various places.  He's been dealing with some health issues but from time to time he'll make it to a jam.

I've done reunions with various guys in the band, Russ back in August of 2015, DeWayne a few times at Rumors and even with Doug Spinler on my birthday bash at Checkers this year, the first time we shared the stage together playing guitars rather than me on drums.  I haven't done anything with Mike since a 1993 blues jam at Attitudes, to which I wasn't playing drums regularly and it sounded like so.  Mike did help with The Routers in 1992 when we played the annual Hal Staley' barn dance.  He's retired from music, if he does anything it's Karaoke and I'm not a fan of that.  I need to sing with real instruments.  Russ did throw out a invite for a jam with the guys in a couple weeks and I did put the word out.  I don't hold much hope about Tyrus ever reuniting on stage again and I'm sure Russ would rather play golf than music but I still believe we'll get together.

Will Julie figured into Paraphernalia?   She has Dreams Of Arcadia, she has Dave Bonham, and even Julie And The Mad Dogs might be resurrected. And she has the Wednesday Checkers Acoustic Jam every other week.  She does find the time to do a couple songs with me at jams and I like that arrangement.  She's welcome to join in on the fun if and when it happens.  But I do tell her to follow the money since Paraphernalia won't be a money making venture.  Russ and I tend to get together once every five years to see if the fires still going and last time we did that, I was singing Rocky Mountain Way instead of him.   Dewayne still works a night time job plus he is a full time grandpa and loves his grandkids but he has been known to partake a jam or two.

As they say, stay tuned for further developments.  Brenda and Greg Mein might figured into this as well.

30 Years Employed

Today, was my 30th Anniversary at my place of employment.  I never thought this day would come.

Since September of 1985, I joined my place of employment  as a temp, doing third shift key entry processing Pell Grant Apps.  The hours sucked but at least I could listen to music and I did quite a bit of that.  Back then my place of employment was a pretty good place to work, perhaps a career job.  It took me two and a half years to finally get on as a permanent on second shift.  I wasn't playing music at the time and for some reason sold my Zickos set dirt cheap,  I basically just threw them out on the front yard waiting for the garbageman to pick them up.

I look at my tenure at my place of employment in a bittersweet mode.  I'm amazed that I have stuck around for 30 years, even five years ago I didn't think I'd survive after job cuts and watching printing go up north due to incompetent and overzealous ops manager that lived in Minnesota and thought we'd make the migration north.

In the five years, I was destined to go to packaging, but Ellen from scanning lobbied hard for me to join her team and thankfully I did, and managed to have a decent year in Iowa City once again.  And then they moved everything and everybody back up to C.R.  Ellen also suggested that I should play in jams as well, so I took her advice as well.  She also thought she could change management and have them adapt to her style of managing.  That didn't work.

In 2016 the ax fell and we lost Ellen, plus Kate, Brad and a few others.  It hasn't been the same.  When the old company was in operation, they rewarded employees with milestones every five years.  It used to be we would get a nice gift for being a dedicated employee.  That too has gone by the wayside.  There was no acknowledgement of my hire date, no certificate of recognition, no good job comments, no pizza, nothing, it was just another day of trying to slit and scan wet and warped Puerto Rico documents and getting nowhere.  But at least I didn't get called into the office and getting bitched out over something that I have no control over.

I miss the days of Pell, the days of company parties and Jay Clark giving kudos to the workers in the old company meetings.  I miss the days of Data Input and my old boss Greg Nutter and me getting together to jam.  I miss trading music with Mike Davenport and bullshitting with Dennis Pusateri and I miss Ellen and her peptalks and caring about us co workers. I miss talking baseball with Denny Ballard. It really was a great place to work.

I have good memories of the old days.  But I also remember the not so great. Wynna Witmer and her antics. Watching Mark Messier having a seizure in front of us one day that freaked out our senior in Pell,  The night Chris Street died in a horrific accident in front of the driveway to our place of employment.  The day my appendix almost ruptured and leaving me on the couch at home for three weeks in 1996.  The weird fall of 1991 when Jayne Doyle worked up there and me and her had to drive Doreen home after Doreen got thrown out of the old Gas Company bar and she was too drunk to get home.   The night in 1985 when it was 10 below zero and the hood of the old 1968 Olds Cutless flew in the air going to Hardees for supper.  And the blizzard of late 1985 to which I ended up getting stranded out on a country road after a Bubba in a pickup truck cut me off and I ended up in a ditch.   Despite it all, I had some good times.

There's not a big list of people to thank, but I do thank Sonya and Louie and especially Rod Albaugh for helping me through the past year, and of course Dan Moyer for being supportive of my music efforts.  We never connected till he found out I played hard rock drums, now we get along quite well. Also to the memories of Sue Halverson,  Danny Bowman, Dennis Pusateri, IBM Mark Vlasic, Lavern Garner, Jim Rogers and Boone Novy.

But most of all, thanks to Bev Bowman who took a chance and hired me as a perm on May 16, 1988 along with Paula Bakey and a couple others, Denny Ballard who welcomed me into Printing/Scanning  and Ellen Cary-Grimm for being the last resort and at least saving me from going to the 10th tier of Dante's Inferno for at least a couple of years.  And to all of the good folks that did come and gone during the busy season and past permanent people.   I never thought I would last this long.

Stone City Acoustic Showcase Set List 5/13/18

Songs:

Listen To Love
Six Days On The Road
Fox On The Run
Everybody's Talking
Logic And Lies

Notes:  I managed to pop in for a half hour to check out the Rumors jam.  Had I stayed longer I could have jammed with Mark Awad and Sippie Bynum (Ernest) later on.  Dan Moyers were up there as well.  It was the first time since April 1st that I was there.  I did say hello to Sonya Adair and wished her a happy Mother's Day.

Steve Black Wolf and Sofie Chesney was in Stone City and they took off for Otis Tailgater's for the Sunday Night Jam.  I didn't feel like taking another trip into Cedar Rapids so I passed but I supposed I should have stayed longer at Rumors.  Trevor Worcel has been playing more drums at Otis from what I heard.  He's also in the band that Mark Randolph is now in.  Mark tried to recruit me for that band but I couldn't do it.  It wasn't my type of music.

Friday night Dreams Of Arcadia played in Solon, and I popped in the last set to help out.  Everybody's Talking and For What Its Worth were the songs I played.  A big monsoon hit the area  just in time for the load out and Dave got soaking wet loading things into the car.  I did some help.

An edited photo from a couple weeks ago when Julie and Dave came up to Stone City to play a set.

Songlist:

Six Days On the Road
Just To Satisfy You
I Start Hating Cheating Songs Today
In The Wind Tonight
Logic And Lies

Second Set:

Everybody's Talking

Lauren Rene Shuter took the photos.

Notes:  Small crowd of jammers which enabled me to do an extra set of songs later on.  The second set were the songs that I could sing without the songbook.  It's My Time I sang the wrong verse.  Since the song is obscure, nobody paid much attention to it.

Dan Hartman, taking a break from the Cooters jam joined later on in the day as well as Maki.

Checker's Acoustic Jam 5/2/18 Thunderstorms In Love

Song list:

Fox On The Run
Six Days On The Road
Woman (Sensuous Woman)
Act Naturally/Blitzkeg Bop
Logic And Lies
Sundown
Stop Dragging My Heart Around
Gold Dust Woman

With:
Julie Gordon on (Sundown, Stop Draggin My Heart Around, Gold Dust Woman-vocals)
Richard Edward Butler-Avant Garde Coronet Solo at the end of Gold Dust Woman

And

Steve Black Wolf
Glen Gardner
Dave Bonham
Ed Butler
Kim Trevillion
Jay Devore
Mike Frederick
Carl Meiners
Belinda James

Notes:

A weird one for sure.  My mind kept wondering all over the place during the performance and  even to the point that on Stop Draggin My Heart Around, Julie had to take over.  Plus the place was stuffy so I couldn't get going.  Julie did a fine job on the vocals as always.  At the end of Gold Dust Woman, Ed decided to try a coronet solo which sounded like a bunch of Canadian Geese attacking.  But it was something out of the ordinary.

We also had Thunderstorms off and on during the jam.  So everybody got soaking wet on the load out.

It was the first time that we had Belinda James rejoin the jam after her being out due to foot surgery.

Despite the Bacon Jam going on at Silver Star Saloon, we did have a decent crowd, mostly regulars from the Stone City Jams helping out.
