Gold Dust Woman
Me And Bobby McGee

Kat Blue-Vocals
Billy Bourbon-Guitar
Tommy Bruner-Guitar and Vocals

With
Rick Wengel, Tom Berdo, Greg Nosh, Joe Mullenix, Gary Markley, Bill Whalen, Tammy Unash, Shelly Foley, Bob Jones, Wildcat Spratt, Bob Jones and Shelley Foley

Another small crowd and jammers, tho once again the legendary Wildcat Spratt closed things down in thunderous fashion with Whipping Post  and Billy opting for three tag endings to Midnight Special.  Rick Got to do the tag endings to Five Long Years as well.

For myself, it was working again with Kimberly aka Kat Blue on the songs she's most best known for.  I enjoy backing her up, tho it does irritate a couple other folk when I do.    Shelly Foley made a rare appearance with her bestie Bob Jones.

Artisan Sanctuary: Ragged Glory

Songs:

Logic And Lies
Street Fighting Man
Pawnshops Are No Place For A Wedding Ring
Wang Dang Doodle
Cinnamon Girl
Gold Dust Woman

Special thanks to Virginia Harlow for the use of her amp.  It really did made me sound like Neil Young.

In a way.

A lot of people were there but Dave Bonham, Katy Merrifield and Patrick Ticklenburg couldn't hang around long enough and nobody really wanted to hear the meth guy close up the show. So I went home as well.  It was Freddy Jones' birthday as well.  Thought I could use him for some of my songs.

Virginia brought up a small Marshall amp with a lot overdrive to it,   It didn't fit Logic And Lies very well but Street Fighting Man and especially Cinnamon Girl benefited from a grungy metallic sound. Wang Dang Doodle was debuted and people seemed to love that Captain Beefheart/Howling Wolf sound.  For an encore, I tried out Gold Dust Woman but without a female singer to it.  I thought perhaps Kimberly might have been up there or Julie  but I threw a lot of power chords to the ending.  I know Julie would have hated that version anyway but again, I got a good response of out people.

Brian Bries came up after me and was the sweet innocent voice to my Avant Garde growl.    I later added some cowbell to M.J's version of White Room

So far, the Acoustic Adventures have been well received despite my ragged performances.  Even had some guy asking if I had a card to promote myself, to which I told him, it's a hobby but you're free to throw me a five spot just in case you want to.

Bob Corritore took note note of my photo shot from last night and posted it on his site.  To which I'm honored to join the long line of blues artists and new artists to show off his T Shirt.  Complete with the Wayne Gretzy look too.  LOL.   I hope I can make it to the Rhythm Room when I'm out in Phoenix, if ever I get out there again.  Thank you!

Thoughts from The Townedger-June 2021

The Milkweeds are here and so are the Monarchs.

It was 45 years ago that my first love, who lived in Michigan came down to visit her relatives.  It would be the last time that I would ever seen Jeanette again.   It was doomed to fail from the start, we were just kids with a kiddie crush on one another.  The year before, I went to Michigan and seen her and she had long dirty blond hair and she chased me around the yard.  Swore it was love, hell I was 14 years old, what did I know?  Her dad wouldn't let me take her up to the Dairy Queen for a ice cream cone. But he promised next year he would let us go there.  I never saw her again.  Later on, in high school I had a freshman girl, Janice chasing me around, I didn't acknowledged her till a dance one night, she wanted to dance, I said why not and grabbed her only to have her pull away.  We were never on the same page, wished I never met Janice. Her memory still haunts me 45 years onward.

20 years ago, I met Isabella via a singles web site and went up to Seattle to see her.  The June get together was fine but the next time we met in October, she wasn't so nice.  She bought her bunny rabbit who kept peeing on the hotel pillows and she freaked out at a pizza joint about her methodrone being misplaced.  Dropped her off at her place and returned back to the airport only to have her tell the world I left her for another.  Called her bluff and then washed her out of my life.  She still might be on Facebook but me thinks that the real Isabella told her to use her own name instead of hers.  IT's odd, when I was up in Seattle twenty years ago, every day was nice and sunny and in the 70s.  I can't say if Isabella was a lost cause but she did cause some insult by using the real Isabella Rosselini's name.

I do love my visits to Seattle, but most of the records that I knew about back then are long gone. Especially Cellophane Square.  They were amazing to go to for used CDs, even found new ones used, namely the Jerry Butler Gamble-Huff Years.

Last weekend, after a hard spring processing, I went Kayaking with Julie and her friends.  And then what I thought was a relaxing time was anything but that to the others.  But it opened up a door to the past that has been hidden for many many years.

I have (AS) or Asperger's Syndrome, a disorder that causes me to not be very sociable and have a hard time talking to people, it probably shows in the blogs that I write that miss a few thoughts and things while writing.  I have had this for all my life and it took a friend of Julie to see the patterns.   But it always been there.  It was there when I dated Nicole years ago or Olivia or perhaps back then when Jeanette was around.  It was around when my good friend from Webster City Greg and I talked and he did all the talking. It was around in high school when the student council voted me and three other gifted guys Mr Irresistible and I wanted nothing to do with them.  But I was one of them.

This may explain my stage fright, or on and off interests in playing in bands or doing anything with The Townedgers.   Or one week I can sit with my fellow musicians at a table and next week, I return back to sitting alone at a table.  Being a prisoner to myself, in a crowded room or bar I am still alone.  Or having depression was basically AS and I just didn't own up to it.  In fact I do a lot of denying it seems.
But now that I know I have this, I will have come to terms and take care of it to be a better person. Still, I remained hurt and still disappointed that my other half saying that time was torture.  Perhaps the next time, I will put on a life jacket since I am not that great of a swimmer.

I still have to shake my head and smile about Kris' awkward look when I was playing the Cajole at the Norway bash last Saturday.   Each show, I decide on what to take for percussion and take notes.  In this case it would have worked better had they gone unplugged, but then again, they could have heard me, had their turned down the amps.  Oh, sweet youth, I was young once and went for loud and proud,, which in the end got me a blown eardrum and can't hear worth shit anymore.

Come next weekend, my former co conspirer, fan and one time friend and lover  Nicole will finally get married to a good guy that she's been with for almost six years.  Twenty years ago, we struck up a conversation at a meeting in St Louis in 2000 and nine years later begin a two and half year love affair that had its share of problems.    In all fairness, she remains a good friend and has a good heart but she never quite knew about my  Asperger's syndrome, she would have said I forgot to had a second S to that.   She supported the efforts of my solo work and The Townedgers, but I cheated her out of hearing me play at that time.  I still love her in my own way, but I think she did choose the right guy for her.

Rick Rystrom aka Rick Tron sent me a copy of some of our performances at the Waubeek Jam, a whopping 68 minutes of this!  I saw him at the Meinfield final gig at Checkers and he said he would send me a copy of the songs.  I asked him if Mak Dervo was thinking of starting up the F B Jam, and he said that Mak isn't too interested of doing it again.  They might do one more jam for old times sake and it will be history.  I rather not see it go myself, I had lots of fun during the 8 hour plus jams we had there, till they turned the lights off.  And they had to do that a few times, thanks to Mr. Kirksey.

I'll be very busy next month with the Acoustic Adventures and Blues Rox and will continue to document the songs played and places I visited.  It's a hard habit to break.

Till Next  Time.

Stone City 6-27-21

Songs:

Fever
Willin'
Behind Blue Eyes
Good Time Charlie
If You See Her
Rainbow In The Dark
Ring Of Fire
Cinnamon Girl
Solitary Man

(Kristopher looking lost at the lack of drums, From Prairie Creek Saloon, Norway IA 6-26-21)

Notes:

Saturday, Blues Rox opened up for Noize Junkies at Prairie Creek Saloon in Norway.  I decided to bring the snare/Cajole set up.  An interesting concept but works better for unplugged rather than electric.  Without a bass drum I had to use the Cajole as a bass drum and with it not miked up made it harder to hear and poor Kris, judging by the look in his face on this photo taken by his mom Judy didn't quite know what to make of it.   That will be the last time I play Wipe Out, Free bird and Voodoo Chile on cajole.  Afterward, I told Brian that since I played half a drumset, I would charge him half.  It was a good laugh.

Sunday, being hung over and having sore wrists, I decided to just do the Stone City Acoustic Showcase instead, Rumors had the return of the Wildcat Spratt back on drums and about 7 others, so I didn't think I would be missed.  Trying to get back into the swing of things, I started out playing Fever for the first time in a couple years.  Got a good crowd reaction out of some of the songs.  Solitary Man ended up to be the extra song.  The lack of not playing it did show but as they say if you make a mistake, play it twice.

Checkers-Happy Birthday Kat Blue

Songs played:

Distant Early Morning Light
No Expectations
Willin'
The Long Black Veil
Behind Blue Eyes
Satin Sheets
Train Goes Nowhere
Cinnamon Girl
Jet Airliner
Stop Draggin My Heart Around

Call Me The Breeze

Kat Blue-Lead vocals on Stop Draggin My Heart Around, Reason and Call Me The Breeze

With
Julie Gordon
Dave Bonham
Bill Sclatter
Patrick Ticklenburg
David Kirzen
PJ and Pam Herrington

A spare crowd, due to Faster Pussycat and Enuff Z Nuff playing in town and the Olympic Jam but I made it up there and play a half hour worth of tunes and had the birthday girl Kimberly pop up to sing a couple songs.  Julie's ideal to let her sing so we did a couple, but shyed away from Gold Dust Woman.  It was the first time that I played Call Me The Breeze on guitar and barely made it through the Tracy Chapman cover.   If nothing else, we did Stop Draggin My Heart Around.   But I'm open to do more songs with Kimberly in the future.  Including that other song.

Whiskey Jo's-First Appearance

Songs

Sweet Home Alabama (slowed down to a crawl)
Runaround Sue
Gold Dust Woman
Call Me The Breeze
Kansas City
Midnight Special

with

Kat Blue-Vocals 1-4
Donna Jo-Percussion and vocals
Tommy Bruner-Guitar and vocals
Bill Bourbon-Guitar and vocals on Kansas City and Midnight Special
Tom Berdo-Harp up to Gold Dust Woman
Rocky Burmeister-Harp on Kansas City and Midnight Special
Terry McDowell-Host n drummer
Mark Awad-Bass
Rodney Smith-Drums

It was my first time coming to Whiskey Jo's.  An interesting blend of folks there, Greg Nost, DJ, Joe Mullenix, Cathy Coyle and Anita Skelton were there from the Rumors crowd, Phil Bo, Freddy Jones and Phil's wife from the local area and of course, David Kirzan and Kat Blue.  Once again, my thinking is not there, I think I played more than six songs but I gather they were quite long with plenty of jams.  It was the first time I jammed with Mark Awad since March of 2020.  I don't think he remembered me.

Sweet Home was slowed down from the usual fast pace beat.  I don't know if Tommy is winding down and playing slower or I'm not aware I'm playing that fast.  I guess playing slower enables me to do a bit more drum fills but since I have been dealing with ear pain and hearing loss, I stayed more to the beat.  And it kinda looks that way from here on out in this life.

In true Billy Bourbon fashion we concluded with two different endings of Midnight Special to end things. Tom Berdo blew out his harp speaker on Gold Dust Woman.  Rocky came up next to help out on Kansas City.  I heard that the crowd was on the small side but we had more jammers than we did on Sunday.

With spring processing over, I can get back into playing at the open mics and jams once again.  At least till October.

Rumors-Father's Day 2021

Rain
Evil Ways
Rock And Roll Hoochie Koo
Jumpin Jack Flash

Tommy Bruner-Guitar and vocals on Rain and Jumping Jack Flash
Jeff Brown-Keyboards and vocal on Evil Ways
Tim Canfield--Bass and Vocal on Rock And Roll HK
Morris-Guitar and no vocals
Nick Lnenicka-Harmonica and no vocals
Terry McDowell-Host
R. Smith-Drums and no vocals

There was one other song, but I can't think of it.

Not much of a crowd.  Ronnie Boles, Dan Hartman, Rick Wengrl and Andy were there.  Four drummers.  Nick recorded parts of Rock And Roll Hoochie Koo and Jumping Jack Flash.

I had to cut short my performance and get to get home before the storm hit.  Thankfully it wasn't much of a storm.

Saturday Night, I came home to a party across the street, of course everybody was invited in town but nobody talked to me, tho a couple said hello.  Blue 60 was there and Tim was playing bass.  He saw and waved to me and I listened to a few song up till they did Mustang Sally, then I went home.  The kid drummer showed his age in lack of knowledge of the songs.  But then again, 40 years ago, I was like that kid as well.

"it was torture to me"

..and that cuts like a knife.

Bryan Adams couldn't sang it any better.

(Jeff Allen, Freddy Jones, Russ Swearingen looking onward)

What I thought was a nice weekend kayaking on the Wapsi was anything but that to the one that I have been seeing for over four years and I felt like I got thrown under the bus.  So I was in a bad mood all the way up to the first acoustic adventures showcase since March and I was as rusty as the bottom of my Corsica, rusting away in the yard.  It didn't help that the boom mic stand kept sliding down.  So I did two fucked up versions of Fox On The Run to which the final chorus fuck up.  I rehearse this song twice before I went out.  And still fucked it up once again.  Perhaps it is time to retire it?

Russ came out to support me tonight.  He was much needed since my other half has been miffed at me for the weekend excursions.  My poor guitar got the burnt of the anger into Behind Blue Eyes to which I managed to pull that one through for the first time.  I tried it a couple years ago at Whittier but Belinda James was the vocalist.  But this version tonight was the keeper.

Some things shouldn't be attempted, a poor Bob Dylan spoof on Satin Sheets and a spoof on  Short Dick Man.  But I concluded with a potent Cinnamon Girl.  to which Russ, Jim, MJ, Jeff, Mike both Patricks and Virginia remained.    Things ended around 10 15 PM.

More Photos From Fred Stock.

And here we are.  Fred Stock has shared his photo stash of Fred Stock 2021, a day of bands coming to his place to play tunes.

1

Fred himself, bass player for Palomino Band and host.

2

Doug Spinler, guitar player for Palomino Band.  We went to school together but back then, he was a very good and gifted guitar player, I was still playing coffee cans.  We did jam together in 1981 after I bought my drums.  He was a whole lot of country, I was too rock and roll.  We did jam one more time in 1983.

3

4

5  Hart/Parker with this little girl dancing away.   She was quite busy with all that dancing but at the end she decided that she wanted Julie's chair, which didn't go over too well.  Even after I broke part of it beforehand.

I guess I like this picture so much I decided to post it twice.  Deb Swearingen took this photo, Fred added it to his collection.

Hart/Parker.  On a high note, they did ask Julie to help them sing a couple of songs just for old time's sake.  The AcoustaKitties came together one more time, which I thought it was neat, and I suspect Julie thought so too.    Here's hoping we can return back to the garden again for F.S.2022.

(Paris Iowa, Wapsipinicon River and the final destination of our kayak trip)

Julie and myself went kayaking today On the Wapsipinicon River, started somewhere outside of Troy Mills and ending next to the Paris Bridge, where a lot of teens were blasting rap music and jumping off the bridge.  Not exactly a good idea, the Wapsi is only four and half feet deep.  I never went kayaking before, and Julie was talking how fun it would be.   With her friend Rick in town, we decided to do this.  It took about three and half hours to maneuver the river and I did panic at the start but thankfully I managed to keep my cool and finally overcome such things as sandbars, fallen old trees and a hot but not humid sun..  And seen a lot of cool butterflies as dragonflies hitched a ride on the kayak  Even with sunscreen, my legs and arms are sunburned.

Julie had a bit too much sun  and hurt her back so I took her home and picked up weeds as she watered her garden.  But she wasn't happy with me, so  I figured to quit while I was behind. And after a while, I bid her goodbye and head to Rumors to hang out.  A small crowd and smaller jammers, I came up after Rocky blew his voice out on Roadhouse Blues and Born To Be Wild.  Highlights included a crazed Gimme Shelter which was part Stones and part Grand Funk Railroad.  I got a bit wild but stayed in the confines of Dan's bass riffs.  Jeff Taylor went keyboard crazy on Hey Bartender which started out with me messing around with the high hat accents to the start of the song and Jeff followed suit.  Quite a few slow numbers from Billy, Willin' went pretty good but he discovered the infamous Rodeo song which I never played before, nor Today I Started Loving You Again, to which I ended with a double bass petal beatdown.  And concluded with Suspicious Minds, the old Elvis Presley song, which I also didn't play at all before.

Over all, a end to a long and busy week.  And a decent sunday funday jam to boot.

Blues Rox at Fred Stock 2021

Song list:

Can't Get Enough
Texas Flood
Ready For Love
Whole Lotta Shaking Going On
Wonderful Tonight
Free Bird

With:
Patrick Ticklenburg
Virginia Harlow
Fred Stock
Randy Olson
Katy Merrifield
Doug Allenmang for bringing the drums.

Bands:

Corey Baker and Secret Sauce
Bad Dog 2020
Kat Blue and No Limits Band
SoundeXcape
Robbie Young And The New
Palomino Band
Hart/Parker
Jules And Guitar Dave

For all the big deal bout not having a set list, we found the right songs and played them.  And I didn't worry about having to play Wipe Out but we did end the set on a 10 minute free from romp on Free Bird. Alas, I broke a drum stick after Can't Get Enough, the first time I broke a stick playing for Blues Rox in the two years.

It was a nice warm sunny day but not too humid and we had a nice breeze keeping us somewhat cool. There was a couple of rough spots, a quick end to Whole Lotta Shaking and trying to throw up while playing Can't Get Enough for the 947th time but folks were taking in by our jam to Free Bird, dedicated to a friend of Brian and he wondered if we wanted to play it.  I really didn't have a problem at all, and I think with Kris finding his way through the lead guitar after the final chorus is that he's getting better.

Russ is taking in the view, getting more comfortable being part of the band.   Strange how the Paraphernalia rhythm section has gotten back together again.  Hell, I always love having him on stage with me.

Brian singing to Free Bird I'm thinking.  When he's playing alongside Kris on stage is when he's is the most happiest and proud dad.   I've been part of their life off and on for four years running and  I don't mind sitting in and playing the beats.  It may sound like that they are making me go kicking and screaming into playing but when we do play, we get down to business.

(Kat Blue took this photo of myself and Jules)

I did miss out of seeing Corey Baker and Bad Dog 2020 with Tiffany Manhapey on drums, but saw Kat Blue and No Limits with Mike Williams and Bonnie Harrison helping out.  Some guy than play guitar for a half hour and then a gospel singer popped up before we took the stage.  My old school mate Doug Spinler and host Fred Stock played in their band Palomino and then Hart/Parker and Jules and Guitar Dave closed things out, with Rick Wengel on congas to finish.   Cathy and Lorie fid a fun thing and invited Julie to sing with them on two songs, Proud Mary and All About that Bass.  A reunion of the AcoustaKitties in a way.

Wicked Wizards didn't play due to Stu Fondle being part of the metal mania at Just Jules with Revenge Of The Mudkats, to which it looked like the crowd was nonexistent.   A celebration for Denny Clift (with Four Day Creep, Superknot, Jett Thrett (with Karie Skogman) and others packed the Chrome Horse.

Rumors 6/6/21

Songs

Further On Down The Road
Gold Dust Woman
Got My Mojo Working
Give Me One Good Reason
Angel From Montgomery
Call Me The Breeze

Kat Blue-Vocals
Billy Bourbon-Guitar N Vocal
Tommy Bruner-Guitar N Vocal
Morris-Guitar
Ed Butler-Bass
Nick Lnenicka-Harp
Terry McDowell-Host
R. Smith-Drums

Came into town on a emergency call and managed to stop over to Rumors to play a few songs with Kimberly and the same crew with the exception of Ed playing bass instead of Dave Bonham who is  doggie sitting.   DJ Hovenstot deferred so I got to take his place to play drums.  A very hot n humid day, I passed on Stone City playing guitar and will return in two weeks to contribute something on guitar.  Tim Canfield was the host bass player.  A very small crowd, Bob Miller was the other drummer.  So I got to play six songs.  Call Me The Breeze started out improvised and Billy was yelling at me for something, play louder or faster, I don't know and he added the riff from T For Texas for fun and games.  I was kinda winded from mowing beforehand and managed to wash my hair and throw some sort of body wash to smell better, but still smelled like a old Peppermint stick.  Terry replaced the drumheads with something new and it had a warmer sound but I think I liked the other Evans heads better.   Anyway, I think I need to get back to practicing more on drums too.  A very ragged performance.
