Christmas and the year in review.

Happy holidays.  It's another brown Christmas, temps are in the mid 40s and it's a nice day.  To which at this time of year, I go back and take a look at the year, both good and bad.

2021 turned out to be more trying year than 2020.  The Waubeek and Whittier Jams are a thing of the past and probably not coming back for next year or for that matter the Parlor City Blues Jam.  There are still some neat jams and open mics in town but the ones on weeknights have suffered.  Whisky Jo's and Checkers are the two main ones, The Artisan still has the twice monthly open mics and the Quad Cities have plenty if I want to drive there, or Des Moines, or Dubuque.   I made one trip to the Smokestack to check out and of the course the Black Friday Jam at the Eagles' Club that had bad sounding drums and I ended up getting Covid two days later.  While it was considered mild, I still slept most of the first two weeks away in December and couldn't stop the hacking/coughing.  It was the worst that I felt since 2018 when I had to cancel two jam tributes that year.  Spring and fall processing and I packed the guitar away for long stretches   The jams opened up this March with Stone City and Checkers started up the acoustic open mics, Checker's moved theirs to Thursday.  Despite the return of Hart/Parker, the participants dwindled down to a select few.  Kat Blue tapped me to help her out in August and it turned out to be a lot of fun but it also came with reservations, namely from my other half who accused me of hanging with the enemy.  Granted,  the hosts of the jams would not come out and support the other acts by showing up.  Kat did have a few more jammers than Julie and Dave did this month.  In Kat's defense, she does enjoy me being a part of her jams and band fill in when needed.  And she's always made good on her end of the deal.   The jam with Julie And Dave would turn out to be the last one at Checkers for a while.  Thankfully, I got there to play it.

I had no time for The Townedgers' projects and Geoff Redding out the door. Robbie Prescott replaces him and whenever we will get around to do another album remains to be seen. The Acoustic Adventures did come around once in a while, tho I favored the Rumors Sunday Funday Jam and me and Terry McDowell have been getting along quite good. For six years, he has done a great job keeping the Rumors jam alive and well.  The core band of Billy Bourbon, Tommy Bruner, Tim Canfield and sometimes Jeffrey Taylor have been the prime players and I enjoy the time jamming with them.  Of course the usual criticisms will come up, (too fast, too loud etc etc), most of time I'll find my way back to their groove, they prefer a simple beat and not too many drum fills, but sometimes I get annoyed enough to roll my eyes and pencil in more Acoustic Adventure appearances at Stone City.  I have not made it to Dharma's for their Sunday Acoustic Jam, I always had some issues with Billylee Janey in the past and Troy Mills is about halfway to Waterloo and takes me off the route to CR and Rumors after playing Stone City.  Sean Ryan has moved the Monday jam in Moline, but I didn't make it to any of those jams, I spent more time watching the Quad Cities River Bandits play and win the Championship this year.  But then I stuck up a friendship with Bryan West of Avey Grouws Band and promised him that when he host a jam down there, I bring a guitar and play and he can back me up on drums.  He's very good and one of the nicest dudes I ever met.  More about Avey Grouws later.

Contrary to rumor I still have not got any groupies or one night stands, not that it matters much, being 60 and no longer a looker, I managed to keep away from temptation.  Cynthia Mahoney is now long gone, I haven't seen her since she walked out during a Artisan performance and we all for the better of it.  Although, she popped up to post something to that she misses hearing us.  The feeling isn't mutual

The Artisan moving from Marion to Cedar Rapids was one off the biggest stories of the year.  We went from a small, cramped but cozy place to a much bigger place and larger stage.  I do miss the days of going to Marion, tho not so much of trying to find a parking spot when they had the Thursday Bands on the Square   Adding Mike McMeins to the sound guys along with Patrick Lower made me sound better than usual.  Not my vocals are up to par with the pros but it does okay.

Another big story was COVID showing up in November and the jams begin to disappear.  Taz Grant and Kevin Sinmacher lost their battle to COVID and I ended up getting that shit after the infamous Black Friday Jam.  I only played once alongside Taz, but Kevin was there from the beginning adding shots to me to be part of the music scene.  Gregdon Cole also passed away but from cancer.  He is missed greatly as well.

The year of Blues Rox was more uneven than 2020.  In our second year it still remains a father/son duo with a hired rhythm section and the bass player became Russ, my best friend and co hort of Paraphernalia/Tyrus years ago.  It's nice to have a bass player to help out, to hopefully fill out our sound.  But this year, the lack of practice and the lack of wanting to step out that comfort zone has turned this band into a family event for the Bries and the performances suffered greatly.  The best moments came from Chris Avey sitting in our set in October at Checkers Jam with the Mandela Band and Avey Grouws Band, but the next month without Avey, we sounded like crap.  The Jones Country show on the Free Stage had moments of greatness too but I had to compete with Kane Brown's shitty loud beats overpowering our band while they were at rehearsal.   Somehow we passed the audition to come back next year.   Kris did show up for a Whisky Jo's jam, but nobody waited on him and he hasn't been back since.  Chris Avey really did get him to play his absolute best.  A shame that the Parlor City Blues Jam had to end.  Kris had Craig Erickson, Daddy O and Dan Johnson help him solidify his chops.    This month's Artisan I had to bow out, but Mike McMeins filled in nicely. There were some wrong headed moments, especially the worst idea of taking Keep Your Hands To Yourself into a crapola blues shuffle that didn't work, that was at the JA Tap, and we haven't been back there since that episode.  Another one and done was the Wasserbaum Water Park in Williamsburg to which the sound guy worked on the getting the drum sound right for 20 minutes, and then having five people all total to come see us play.  But at least a free night stay at the hotel and getting paid 100 dollars was worth it.  In the end, we regressed more than progressed and showing up to play in front of 10 people tends to take the fun out of this.  It's nothing more than a gloried practice, to which at times we did get paid.  I don't think Kris is that interested of playing, since he's been taking night shift jobs.  Blues Rox has one more gig coming up in January.  I think it will be our last.

If there was one thing that went right, was that Russ Swearingen and I started playing again together. As for any more Paraphernalia Tyrus shows, not going to happen, DeWayne and Dennis have retired, and Mike continues to rag about his ex wife.  40 years ago, Paraphernalia was recording and we were trying to get better but we never did find the right combination of musicians or songs to make it work.  As I sit back and listen to our recordings of 1981-82, it appears that my dad was right, I was bashing the cymbals way too many times.  But being a angry young kid that didn't know shit, I took my frustrations out on my drums and cymbals.  And still wouldn't get laid till a dozen years later on.   Mike was a damn good singer but with our songs, he blew his voice out.  Too bad our main guitar player Doug knew how to turn his amp up to 11.  As they say, the louder you are, the more you suck.

I was flattered and honored to help out Kimberly with the No Limits Band after the Blues Rox Wasserbaum gig.  Kimberly hasn't had the best of luck, with most of her band dropping her after Fred Stock, but No Limits had Craig Erickson and Stacia Roccio helping out and tho we never did get to practice, we seemed to be more in tow than Blues Rox was.  I'm sure 2022 will find me and Kimberly working together off and on.  But again, I will have to fill in if she can't find anybody.  Contrary to what people think, Kimberly and me have a musical relationship and nothing more.

The year with Julie started out great, she made my 60th year on Earth fun and for her birthday in April, I took her to Dubuque.  Then the kayaking incident in July and it hasn't been the same since.  We're still trying to understand each other and tolerate each other's quirks, but outside of playing harmonica in a couple of open mics, we never got around doing much else on stage.  Most of the time she is part of Guitar Dave duo and it works better for her than my set of songs.   2022 may find us either drifting apart or coming back together again.  Life would be so much fun if Kyle was still alive, and she'd be much happier.  The jury is still out on me.

The Cabin Jam this summer I had to deal with adversity between warring people and I doubt if I'll go back there for next year.  I love Donna Jo and Bill Elsner and thank them for their dedication to the cause.  It's a nice cabin, we didn't have to deal with mosquitoes or humid temps, it was a one in a million day.  And I got to once again play drums for Pinicon Drift again, Dave Petersen is one of my fave people to play on stage.  Also at the old Bar outside of Monticello,  Terry McCauley and I got to jam together and he made me work for playing that snare.  I'd love to go see him play and perhaps bring the drums again.

30 years ago, Greg Nutter got me back into playing music again and inspired me to make Diamonds In The Skies, a 1991 album that showed once I worked a four track right, the songs would be much better. The vocals are still in that odd goth sounding tenor, but there's no doubt the songs were strong.  It's a shame that Melissa never heard Sweet Melissa or Christine on Still Strangers but when I think about the time we were going steady,  I blew her off when she was ready to rock.   I was in the wrong, but at that time I wasn't ready to accomply her on the bed sheet rhumba.  But then again, she was a Gemini and that's the worst sign for me, despite what the stars say.  They been nothing but trouble. Isabella was Gemini too.  For 2022, I plan to cover some of the songs off that album to play live.  2022 will be the 30th Anniversary of Drive In Blues as well.  I think I have a few songs I can play off that album too.

Here's the gang that was part of my musical adventures of 2021

Freddy Jones, Kristopher Bries, Brian Bries, Russ Swearingen, Billy Bourbon, Tim Canfield, Tommy Bruner, Terry McDowell, Dave Bonham, Bill Schettler, Rick Wingle, Nick Lnenicka, Bob Gleason, Tom Berdo, Mike Fredericks, Phil Koening (Phil Bo King), Kimberly Kirzan aka Kat Blue, Donna Jo Elsner, Tammy Wildcat, Steve Black Wolf, Greg and Brenda Mein, Chris Avey, Bryan West, Maurice  Anholt, Dee Vieman, Jeffrey Taylor, Richard Edward Butler, Russ Gracklin, Brett Johnson, Skeeter Louis, Wes, Barbara Finestrom, Jasper Hovenstot, Mark Awad, Ronnie Boles, Carl Meiners, Cathy Hart, Dan Hartman, Al Hendricks, Frank Gasler, Randy Faulkner, Tanya English, Ed English, Dakota McWhortor, Chuck Savage, Corey Baker, Bill Hoag, Jan Hoag, Jim Meyers, Bob Miller, Jeff Allen, Virginia Harlow, Demetrius Harris, Patrick Ticklenburg, Mike Rolen, Eric Paul,  Michael McMeins, Nate Hines, Amanda Marshall, Eddie Jarrell, Michael Clair, David Pedersen and Pinicon Drift, Karl Hudson, Jeff Overly, Craig Erickson, Stacia Roccio, Layne Goldsberry, Perry from Iowa City, Lou Roccio, John Stephenson, Braden Carden, Adam Montgomery, Eric Paul, Blues Boy Billy, Ernest Bynum, Brian "Taz" Grant, Matt Panek,  Mike Zhone, Jeff Craft, Rocky Burmeister, Billy Ginkens, Gary Darling, Dan Johnson, Jamie Allen Vance, Tara Primasing, Jeff Reeder, Brian Laudio, Roger Adams, Tim Kauffman, David Lee Kirksey, Lorie Parker, Terry McCauley, Guy Peterson, Mark Johnson and Marijane Euchner.

I am surprised to see 97 folks share the stage with me.  Some are hall of famers, some are rock and roller, blues, bluegrass, country, some are just starting out and even Jasper is three years old, the oldest is probably Al.   Randy Faulkner is one of the surprises, he did backing vocals for a song Al played but he doesn't play drums anymore. There are legends to boot and somewhere I fit way in the back but still proud to be a part of this.

There are highlights to boot.  Backing up Al Hendricks on his birthday bash, watching Kristopher go into the stratosphere with his blues songs and then see Chris Avey push the envelope much more on his guest spot at Checkers in October.  Having Russ play alongside me.  Having Freddy Jones and Phil Bo help me out on the blues that I play and sing.  Seeing Brook Hoover waving and yelling from the top of the Bohemian on a hot July Afternoon.  Helping out Terry McCauley on the Barn Jam.    And the rare pairing of Steve Black Wolf at the Cabin Jam,  Steve doesn't go out all that much due to his health but it's a treat to see him.  I don't think all the Blues Rox shows were wasted efforts, in fact we did quite well during Fred Stock and Chris Avey really was the best we did.   In due time, it's best to remember the good and forgo the bad.  Everybody, every band has that too.  The Good and the bad, the happy and sad.   Will this all be remembered come 2061?  By then most of us will be dead and the young will be in their forties.

Every year, there's this premonition that this could be my last year of playing.  Hell, I have been saying that every day and then pony up for another trip around the sun.    I think 2022 will be a different year.   I do hope that things will be better and everybody will be around but people will retire, people will die, some will get fed up and quit playing and go back to waste the rest of their years watching TV.  I don't plan to be that person.

I hope to continue to enjoy playing drums and backing people up when the case may be. I don't expect to get rich on my musical adventures, once in a while I'll get a 100 here and a twenty there and appreciate the kindness of strangers.  I hope Julie will still be around but I also hope she will find that happiness that she is looking for, I hope my parents will still be around as well, I hope my mom can return to her fun and usual self.  It's heartbreaking to see somebody you love fall into the despair of Demetria.  And I don't wish that on anybody, or with Covid.   I also hope to get back into playing more guitar and getting back to singing my songs like I once did.   I think that's my option, since I continue to battle those who continue to complain about my loud and fast paced playing.  Believe me, I haven't played fast and loud in a while.   I hope Waubeek and Whittier can continue the jams like they once did but I don't foresee that.  Nor Parlor City for that matter.  But while one jam place ends, another will come around and pick up what was left behind.   Life will go on, and music will go on. But I cannot my life without my mom around.  She's has been supportive of my music going ways and she suffered many a day with me pounding on drums and playing guitar.  Forever indebted to her and forever loved. Love your parents. One day they will not be around.

Blues Rox Report From Brian Bries

As 2021 ends, I reflect on all of the great happenings with our band, Blues Rox.  We typically play about once a month as our personal commitments take top priority.  A little over a year ago, we welcomed Russ Swearingen into the fold and he has been nothing short of fantastic.  Our drummer, Rodney Smith and him go way, way back.  Our first gig of 2021 was on February 19th at  JA Tap.  John and Amanda Hruby do a fantastic job of supporting live music every Friday night and taking a chance on a band that doesn't have a strong following like others.  We did have a gig scheduled the previous week at Prairie Creek Saloon in Norway, but cancelled due to the extreme cold.  Dawn Marie Oberreuter, who previously owned the bar, is a very strong supporter of Blues Rox.

Our next gig was at Checkers Tavern on April 9th.  Pam Harrington and PJ Pj Harrington are also great supporters of the local live music scene and typically schedule live bands every Friday night.

June 12th was a very memorable afternoon, as we were one of the featured acts at the local neighborhood event, FredStock.  Fred Stock is a popular local musician that plays bass for Palomino.

June 26th we played an afternoon show as a 3-peice back at Prairie Creek Saloon that was actually a farewell to Dawn Marie Oberreuter, as the bar was sold to another person.

July 17th was our first event at the Artisan's Sanctuary.  James H. Jacobmeyer is another supporter of live music as the sanctuary holds weekly open mics every Tuesday.

July 24th was the biggest event in the history of Blues Rox.  We were invited to play a Saturday afternoon show at the Great Jones County Fair.  Thanks to Doug Langston.  It was very satisfying to see people walk past the stage tent, and sit down to take in a few of our tunes.

August 6th saw Blues Rox play at Smock Resorts/Wasserbahn in Williamsburg.  Another great show with an incredible sound and lighting system.

We returned back to Checkers for shows on Sept 24th and Nov 12th.  I do want to give a shout out to Chris Avey, Jeni Holtan Grouws, and Bryan West from the AveyGrouws Band who showed up at a weekly Checkers Jam on Oct 10th.  That was an epic night and a wonderful experience for Blues Rox.

We finished our year with a special December event at the Artisan's Sanctuary with fill-in drummer Michael W McMeins from the BassAckwards band as Rodney was dealing with some Covid issues.

Throughout the year you could find members of Blues Rox at various jams in the Cedar Rapids area, specifically Rodney Smith, as he is one of the biggest supporters of live music.

All in all it was a great year and I want to thank all of our family and friends that were able to join us at any of these events.  Also I want to thank all of the band members for the wonderful ride.

Our first event of 2022 is at The Bohemian on January 8th.  I'm not sure what the future has in store for us, but thank you to everyone for being a part of this musical journey.

Billy Bourbon-Bass (all songs) Lead vocal on 4,5,8, 17
Maurice Anholt-Guitar on a few songs
Terry McDowell-Host
R.Smith-Drums (all songs)

There were some off the wall stuff in between breaks, namely Hold Your Head Up to which Tommy was played the riff and there was another song that sounded like To Love Somebody but it became Chevy Van. Despite another snowstorm that dusted the highways, there were plenty of people there.  Kat Blue, Brett Johnson, Anita, Skelton, Greg Nost and Bill Elsner were there with Tammy Unash, who has been with Tommy for over a year.  Tom Berdo had hip replacement and is recovering from that.  Here's hoping he'll get to feeling better soon.

I'm not sure about the medley of I Feel Good/Hell On Heels, but I don't think the latter song was the Pistol Annies, but something that Lorie did with Cathy Hart and Donna Jo knew the song.  California Dreaming was done for the first time, I don't recall playing that song.   The Rodeo Song was done between Dee's songs with Billy remembering most of the words.  There might be a song missing from the list that I wrote down.  There's four of them that I have never done before.  Strange, we didn't play any blues.

Kat Blue had her grandson with her and he gave me a hug while she wanted to play My Baby Loves Me. But I promised her next time we will.   This was the also the first time, I played alongside Lorie since the Checker's Hart/Parker jam of March this year.  She mentioned that this was her first Wednesday off in a while.

During Dee's appearance, she mooned me a few times with her loose fitting jeans.  If you got it, flaunt it.

Comparing the Whisky Jo's jam to Rumors, this is a bit more varied and a bit more fun, tho there are more jammers on Sunday than Wednesday Nights and for me, it's tough to take the night off, tho, my place of employment, we got everything scanned and basically my boss said it was all right to take the night off.  I entertained a thought about grabbing tacos before going over but decided to wait and go after the jam to the Taco Depot.  They're very quick with the order and I was on the way home a half hour later.  I can count these guys to for quality tacos and quickly too.

Tim Kauffman played drums last week, Sir Bob and Bonnie Harrison and DJ Hovenstot played two weeks before but on the final 2021 jam, I relieved Terry.  I guess due to the snowstorm, the drummers decided to hold out and wait till Sunday at Rumors.  The weather doesn't look so hot.  Another snowstorm and 12 below temps await us this weekend and Stone City canceled the open mic.  There is no Checker's Thursday Night open mic, but the Olympic does have one going tomorrow.  I might decide to check out Christopher Gray's kids play live, I doubt that we will be busy at all at work, but I may just hang out and finish up the rest of my year in review blogs and get them in before midnight 2022.  There will be changes forthcoming.  Hopefully, we will all have better luck next year.

At least we can hope.

Artisan-Snow And Go

Only Patrick Ticklenburg, John Weldon, James Jacobmeyer, Mike McMeins and Freddy Jones managed to show up in a after snowstorm that dumped four inches of the white shit in town this season.  More fucking snow on the way.

It took me about two hours to shovel the driveway, all for naught and took a power nap before fighting the red lights, the traffic, the semis and more red  lights to town for the Artisan open mic.  I did entertain thoughts about not showing up but somehow since I had the night off, I would make the most of this.

Turned out that I hogged most of the open mic with a bunch of songs and originals, then Freddy Jones showed up, so we did a few more to close the night.

Jim Jacobmeyer took the photo.

First Set:

I Started Hating Cheating Songs Today
Get It Over With
For What Its Worth
Logic And Lies

Bright Lights, Big City
Light My Fire
I Just Want To Make Love To You (Snippet)
Let's Work Together/

Rock Me Baby

The snowstorm made people stay home, but this turned out to be a whole different set list of songs  Cheating Song once again got a makeover, using the capo fret 3 in the key of C sharp.  It was thought up on the spot so I went with that.  Five of the songs were original and I snuck Never Trust A Sleeping Train in the medley that Freddy played on.  I think we went more deep into the song book than originally planned. But with nobody around, we could experiment.  I wish I could explore more into the songs that I played, but after shoveling snow for two hours, all I could do was take a nap and then go with what I know.    It turned out pretty well, despite me not remember half the lyrics to certain songs.

Mike Fredericks, Dave Bonham, Bill Schlitter and Rick Wingle in attendance.

I started out coming into town and checking up on the folks and then exchanged gifts with Julie before going to Rumor's to which Tommy Bruner a happy birthday.  Rich and Jess Toomsen were there and I chatted with them for the time I was there, but with DJ Hovenstot, Sir Bob Miller and Herman already there on drums, I had to bow out in order to get to Stone City to help Dave out in a uninspired performance.   Later  Billy Bourbon played drums with Mark Awad on bass.

We got hit with a sleet storm after playing Stone City and the S curve into town was slippery but the storm was over and done a half hour later.  This may have been the reason why I got out of Rumors when I did.

Happy birthday Tommy Bruner, who had a birthday bash for the jam.  Tommy is an inspiration to being part of the full time musicians that keeps me on my toes  when it comes to the jams.  A few folks showed up to celebrate.  Jess and Rich Toomsen were there, Phil Bo was there, the drummers were Bob Miller, Herm Saurday, probably DJ hovenstot, and Billy Bourbon in place of me while I headed to Stone City.  Mark Awad, Bob Gleason, Nick Lnenicka, Morris, Brett Johnson and of the course the Firegirl.  Tommy came all the way back from celebrating Christmas with his son in Indiana and got a two hour nap in before playing.  He was spared of having me on drums.

And somebody gave me twenty bucks for my trouble.  What a cool guy who did that.

Kevin Sinmacher passed away yesterday from COVID.   It was a shock to hear about this.  Kevin was instrumental in taking photos of me when I played at Rumors.  He made me feel like I was a part of Dreams Of Arcadia when we opened up for Four Day Creep in 2019.  You could always find him around New Bo putting videos of bands playing at New Bo or The Chrome Horse.  He was a classic rock music lover from beginning to end.  He loved Carry On Wayward Son by Kansas.  To which that song will be forever known when I think of Kevin.  When he filmed Four Day Creep and Dreams Of Arcadia, he put a hidden camera on the drums and there's an unedited version of that with me mugging at the camera.  Sometimes I didn't care for some of the photos taken of me but in reality Kevin knew what he was doing, even if I didn't think much of the photos.  Such as this one that Kevin took.  Kevin played in bands known as Harvey Headbanger, Robin Banks and Retro Rockets, the last one his regular band.  I got to see him a couple more times down in New Bo.  Me and Patrick Lower saw Retro Rockets after the No Limits Band finished up their Homestead gig.

Pat Ticklenburg and Quinton Duarte were part of the showcase tonight.  Rick Wingle played after I left.  Get Rhythm was thought up on the spot when it came to requested Johnny Cash numbers.  Of course I had to do Ring Of Fire, but forgot If I Were A Carpenter, which I could have done had I known. Pat did Dead Flowers later on the show.  Another number I could have done but spaced it off.

In short, most of the usual suspects were here, tho Santa Claus Is Coming To Town was a lousy way to end my set.  I think I did one too many songs but Dave kept saying One More, so Bright Lights Big City was done as the encore.  In the end, somebody did left a 20 on my guitar case, so therefore, it was a paying gig.  And a fun one to boot.  But alas, this would be the last Checker's Acoustic Jam for awhile. It's been put on hold once again.

See you on the other side Kevin.

Kevin Jay Simnacher, 61, of Cedar Rapids passed away on Wednesday, December 22, 2021.

He was born to Robert and Phyllis (Martin) Simnacher in Vinton, Iowa. He graduated from Vinton High School in 1979 and obtained a graphics arts degree in 1981 Hawkeye Community College. He married the love of his Danielle on November 16, 1990, in Waterloo, Iowa.

Kevin had a love for the arts, graphic arts, and music particularly. His passion in life was being a musician and his beloved bunnies.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Danielle of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; parents Robert and Phyllis Simnacher of Vinton, Iowa; sister Becky VanWey of Brandon, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be in care of his parents, Robert and Phyllis Simnacher at 5521 23rd Ave Drive Vinton, Iowa 52349.

Songs:

Logic And Lies
Santa Claus Is Coming To Town
Scrooge
Little Drummer Boy
Midnight Rider
Summertime Blues
Lynch Party
Cinnamon Girl

With:
Dave Bonham, Lane Gaffney, Mak Dervo, Bill Sclettler, Ray Larsen, Danny Trumm, Jay Devore, Mikey Frederick, Katy Merrifield, Kat Blue, Dave Kirzen  and others.

And Phil Bo and his wife.

While the COVID epidemic has once again cut into the regular jams in town, I decided to stick close to home and played a few songs.  I'm still not exactly back into the acoustical groove but at least I'm hiding the shortcomings.  The second and final show of Christmas songs, I had one girl smile upon hearing Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, and perhaps I could have thrown in Jingle Bells.  But I figure three songs were more than enough.

This was my third Stone City showing in three months, particularly going to town to play the Rumors jam instead.  I really have no interest of going to Troy Mills to Dharma's open mic, it's actually more out of the way rather than the five minutes getting to the General Store and hanging with friends there.  Bryce Janey is a great guy and maybe some day I'll get to Dharma's.  I'm not just interested of having to deal with his dad, tho he has mellowed over time.  From what I have heard.

With DJ Hovenstot being nailed with COVID from his birthday jam (He might have contacted that during the Eagles Club Black Friday Jam)  I decided to hold off going to Rumors till next year.  If we are not too busy at work, maybe I'll help Terry with the Whisky Jo's Wednesday Night Jam.  It sounds like Checkers' might be putting the Thursday Night acoustic jam on hold after this year.  PJ hasn't exactly been getting people and jammers to come to these things, even the Avery Grouws Jam didn't bring a whole lot of folk out (tho Blues Rox did show up).  My guess this is the last Thursday jam and it's with Julie and Dave.

Kimberly was in Stone City but left to go to Rumors.  We didn't talk about playing together tonight and I couldn't remember the songs that we did together outside of Gold Dust or Dreams.  The folk wanted to hear the Who, so I did Summertime Blues, and next time we'll do Behind Blue Eyes.  I just didn't practice the latter song before going to Stone City.  Ray Larson did do Country Roads, to which I messed around with it today.  But didn't feel comfortable playing that song.

My first full week coming back from my own Covid Flu/Cold Crap and I did surprised myself in how well the songs did go.  But in reality, a lack of practice due to Covid Flu made me too tired to even practice.  But perhaps for 2022, I will do better to perform songs again.   I don't know about the future of Blues Rox, nor having talk to the guys about what they think.  Dave mentioned that the bass player is the weakest link to that band, others say it's the rhythm guitarist.  The lack of practice between us hurts our performances.  Can the guys get it together before the next gig?  I don't know but I haven't exactly been gung ho either.

For a Sunday before Christmas weekend, The General Store had plenty of people there and things were still hopping when Mak Dervo took the stage and me heading home.   I just didn't see going to Cedar Rapids tonight.

I'm Gonna Kill My Baby
Vaseline

And many others.

(we got off okay but this is up around Clear Lake)

Maurice Anholt was there.  I don't think he played guitar on my two sets.  Terry got the night off after I showed up.  Due to the high winds and severe storm warnings, I was the only jammer there.  Some interesting songs were done.  Mostly Billy Bourbon's original songs.  We did about 14 or 15 songs but can only think of half of them

We have never made it past 70 degrees this late in December but we hit 72 today.   The storms did blow through at around 8 30 but the storm was over in done by 9.  The winds continued to howl tho.

Artisan-With Freddy Jones

Songs played

She Belongs To Me
Santa Claus Is Coming To Town
I'll Be Home For Christmas
Little Drummer Boy
Correspondence
Help Me
Cinnamon Girl

Encore with Freddy Jones on Harmonica

Bright Lights Big City
Let's Work Together
Born In Chicago
Help Me Part Two

First time I got back to playing in three weeks and there was a bit of rust in the songs played.  The Christmas stuff was uneven and perhaps the most depressing version of I'll Be Home For Christmas.  I really shouldn't have done two versions of Help Me, the second one was with Freddy Jones playing harp.  We were the bonus acts to finish off a interesting evening of music.

I felt well enough to play, tho I was three days late from the Blues Rox gig.  But Mike McMeins filled in and did a good job, but I didn't quiz him much about that.  Mike ran the sound tonight.

It was the first acoustic adventures showcase for me since Checkers with Kat Blue and Tommy Bruner.

Blues Rox at The Artisan Sanctuary

Given what I have seen of pictures that there was a bigger crowd tonight at the Artisan tonight to see The Kid, Brian and Russell play tonight.  Michael McMeins played in my absence. I would have loved to come down and support the band cause but since I am dealing with the aftereffects of COVID and now 14 days into this, I didn't feel I should come down and make people sick.  Even tho, I no longer have the chills and fever but the prolonging cough that won't go away.

There may be a chance that I might get to the Open Mic on Tuesday Night.  By then, I should at least be back to somewhat healthier state.

Idle thoughts: December

It's never been a great time to be sick, but I have been stuck with this flu crap for over a week now.  Terry is still out, Bob Miller has taken over for him hosting the Sunday Funday Jam.

Alas, I managed to test positive for the dreaded COVID virus this week.  This is my 10th day having this shit and having to avoid the jams and life itself.  I picked this up at the Black Friday Jam at the Eagles Club to which four of the five participants that ended up getting COVID.    With that in mind, I have to avoid going places from now till next week.  That is the way it goes in life, even when your careful, you will catch the flu virus or COVID.

I can breathe on my own but the problem remains the hacking and coughing.    Blues Rox will have to pick a replacement drummer for me.  And they will be fine.  Just like myself.

For the rest of the year, all I can do is take care of myself and try to overcome this shit.

Terry has returned back to the jams 12/8/21.

Thoughts From The Townedger-Nov 2021

Unlike last year, we have yet to see snow.  Which is fine by me.

Erik Marshall passed away, he was part of the Meekats and early Surf Zombies with Brook Hoover, Kyle Oyloe, and Joel McDowell. I didn't know him personally, only from the Surf Zombies and Meekats albums.  It is always sad to see a fellow musician pass away, more so when they are youuger than you.  I'm sure he and Kyle are having fun in the great beyond with Jimi, Lemmy and a few others.

I did show up to the Black Friday Jam at the Eagles Club but didn't play.   Mitch Smith and Mike Clair was there, Eddie Jarrell, Rocky Smith, Herman, Bonnie Harrison, Mike Williams, Dan Hartman and Matt Panek did play.  Oh, forgot about Leroy Munn there too.  The host drummer had a wide variety of trash can lids that sounded like crap and the drums were vintage Ludwigs.  Had that nice 70s sound, but the cymbals didn't cut it.  Plus they had a boom cymbal stand that kept falling over. I wouldn't be surprised if the cymbals had a bit of keyholing. there.  It was for a good cause.   I think somebody made me sick when I was up there. I've been hacking and coughing since Friday.  And had to bow out of the jams for Sunday.

This month I managed to get out there to play on idle time at work.  But the flu is going around and I think Terry caught it last weekend.  I usually have the sneezes that bother me big time but can't get close to my girlfriend.  Otherwise I'd be sleeping outside.  She and Dave will be hosting the Unhibinated Acoustic Showcase in Iowa City on Tuesday Nights starting this week.  As they say, I'll be there in spirit.

The question of loyalty remains whether or not if it brings any sense of reward.  The Artisan Sanctuary open mic has been the main choice, I can play acoustic guitar and play the songs that I want to play.  There's always those who want to dictate the rules, I know who they are and they have been around the block for decades.  I love em all and like to be a part of their jams.  I haven't convinced Julie to take part in our band, she's busy with Dave and other projects.  Does this mean I should just not try somebody else to play the acoustic music and songs that I like?  Kimberly has been the more receptive of the songs, tho I know she can be as strong willed as Cathy Hart as well.  If I host a jam with Kimberly, then I get raked over the coals, even if it's a paying job.  This kind of attitude has taken the fun out of playing it seems. But I do my damnest to support the likes of Hart/Parker, Jules and Dave and Kimberly's No Limits Band.  The reward is to be compliment on being part of any band and helping out the cause.  I seldom get paid.

For the Sunday Funday Jams, the drummers are coming back.  Which might be the time to get back to playing guitar more often.   In the case of Rumors, the object is to get there early and play and then high tail to Stone City for the acoustic jam.  I haven't thought about Dharma's in Troy Mills,  Stone City is closer, but who knows.

I remember seeing a You Tube video of Skip Lowe playing and winning the drum battle at Guitar Center in Des Moines in 2014.  Skip was once part of Billy Lee Janey's prog rock EXP band and was working at West Music in the late 80s and early 90s.  He was more dedicated to playing drums than I am so I never believed it when he mentioned me to be one of the best.  When I see his video, there's no way I can top what he plays.  Maybe Skip did move to Des Moines and continued on, but I have yet to see a FB page with him.  Maybe he's one of the smart ones and don't have a FB page.  Of course, you are going to have keyboard warriors slamming his looks, but even in a three piece suit Skip Lowe can run circles around them.  He should be a legend in the Iowa HOF of drummers.

For the first time in three years, I have picked up the flu and cold.  I suspect being that Eagles Club Friday might have done that or Thanksgiving at Mom's place. The fever and shakes suck, so does the coughing.  Terry has been hit hard by the flu crud couldn't host the past couple jams.  My guess was that Herman took over.  For this month I'll be laying low for a while.  Getting this shit saps all the energy out of me.   Blues Rox will be back to improve on their music in December.

Whiskey Jo-Thanksgving Eve Bash

Songs:

Some Kind Of Wonderful
Long Time Gone
You Don't Know How It Feels
Up On Cripple Creek
Knocking On Heaven's Door
The One That I Love
Take Me To The River
Me And You And A Dog Named Boo

Bobby Bourbon-Sings on all songs, plays bass
Tommy Bruner Sings on Long Time Gone and Take Me To The River, plays guitar
Donna Jo Farley-Sings On The One That I Love, plays percussion
Rodney Smith-Plays drums and shuts up
Terry McDowell-Host as always

Troy Mitchell showed up to play drums.  I can't recall the last time he played drums at a jam
DJ Hovenstot played drums
So did Jasper

Most of the faithful were either at Checker's celebrating DaddyO McMurrin's birthday bash or at Riverside Casino with the Blues Ladies Rock with Avey Grouws Band providing the music. This is Bryan West, Avey Grouws Band's drummer extraordinaire.    The big surprise was Troy Mitchell playing drums.  He always rock, even with the blues, he's pure rock n roll.  He and Bryan are two are my fave drummers, and of course Terry too.  That is Bryan with yours truly during the Avey Grouws Jam of last month.  I don't expect to see any pics of tonight's jam.  Could be wrong and if there's any of note, I post them.   Either now or the end of month report.

It was a simple drum set that Terry had,  One less crash cymbal so basically I played a more stripped down beat, tho I got a bit too fancy pants on Take Me To The River.  Gotta keep it simple.  It was a interesting song to conclude the jam, the Lobo cover.  Never played it before I don't think.  It sounded like we knew the song, where the breaks and accents were at.

Kimberly did sing the majority of the songs with Troy providing drums.   Donna Jo did figure in the last five songs.  We chatted for a bit and I told her that I've been dealing with health and family issues and didn't mean to ignore her when I showed up.  Nothing against her, but I tend to bottle things up and not let folk know what is going on.

My boss was good enough to let me play tonight's jam, tho we did have work that first shift didn't do.  I'm sure come December I will pick and choose more jams on the week nights.

Bottom Photo is Tommy, Troy and Herman, one of many drummers that showed up tonight.
Above is DJ Hovenstot and Jasper.  Billy Bourbon took these photos, Old Stone Face was camera shy tonight.

Down in Riverside the Women Of the Blues did a show down at the Casino to which Avey Grouws Band were there as backup.  This is a photo of everybody getting together at the finale.  Chris Avey and Bryan West are having lots of fun, despite the drum shield.  I hate those things.

Rumors-You're Playing Too Loud Herman Stop It!

Songs:

Hey Bartender
Dock Off The Bay
Wildwood Weed
Long Time Gone
Mary Jane's Last Dance
Midnight Rambler

Billy Bourbon-Guitar and vocals
Tommy Bruner-Lead Vocal on Long Time Gone and Midnight Rambler, guitar
Tim Canfield-Bass
Terry McDowell-Host
Nick Lnenicka-Harmonica
Maurice Morris-Guitar
R. Smith-Drums

To which Terry was under the weather to the point that he let Herman take over at around 4 30.  Herman got a bit too rambunctious that he was told to quiet down.  I don't believe I was that loud, tho we did have a lot of jam time fun on Long Time Gone and Midnight Rambler, to which I actually figured where Tommy was going to with that song.  Last time we did this song, it didn't come out very well but it's a jam and nobody cares.  This time out, it went pretty good.

Tommy Giblin and Brook Hoover are the new guys in Chad Johnson's oldies revue known as the Past Masters.  I still hope to record with Brookie on some new music.

While Terry wasn't feeling well, he did have plenty of drummers to take his place.  I did six songs that totaled around 30 minutes.   Even DJ Hovenstot's grandson  Jasper was there, Bob Miller popped up later, as well as Mikey Lint and Tino Kaufmann and a drummer that replaced me but didn't get his name.

I didn't make my way to Stone City, opted to go see Julie and Franklin and watched most of the Sparks Documentary which should pick up interest in that band.  I have a few of their records, including Pretending To Be Drunk, which was the deal breaker with Atlantic from what I heard.  But then again that label has always been a farce to anybody outside of Led Zeppelin it seems.

(Photos from the Kat Blue Collection)

This was the third and final of the Long Lunch jams this week for me.  However, I had to go to the ER to take care of chest pains, to which nothing was found but I was still lying in pain most of the afternoon.   They had me there for three hours, while I took a couple naps during to a constant beep.  247 dollars for a three hour stay.  Lord know what it would have been if I stayed the night.   Once they let me go, I went to Checkers to support Kimberly's jam,  to which a few folks showed up.

It was the first time I actually got play guitar with Tommy since The Longbranch jam of about four years ago. He talked about wanting to play guitar on a couple originals but my mind was drawing a blank, looking back the song Teri My Love would have been perfect with his guitar lead.  The surprise was playing the Gallows Pole riff on Train Goes Nowhere.  First time I ever attempted that and it came out of the blue.  A couple of messups on the songs but I'll never reveal which songs they were.

Kimberly did join back on stage to play Cinnamon Girl with Tommy for the first time.  We usually do Gold Dust Woman or Stop Draggin My Heart Around.  But then I dropped my pick inside the guitar and ended up getting a couple blisters on my thumb.   Freddy Jones did some harmonica work then left to enjoy his supper.

I played during his lunch break.

And then off to support Julie and Dave's Acoustic jam at Uniniabred in their debut night in Iowa City.  No, I didn't play.

It was the first time since I played Whisky Jo's since September and got to play a variety of music and ideas done by the Mandela's and Dee coming up to sing her songs.

DJ, Joe and Greg were there
Jeff Brown gave me grief about skipping lunch
Matt Panek was there but declined to play

Quintin Duarte played at the Open Mic acoustic jam

Will see about hitting Kimberly's jam tomorrow for a hour or so.

Since there was no action photos, you're stuck with a Hello Kitty drum set.

Artisan-Protective Stupidity

Songs:

I Can't Be What You Want Me To Be
The Last Time
Help Me
Logic And Lies
Behind Blue Eyes
No Expectations
Cinnamon Girl

(Missing Mike Moran, who now lives in Virginia and teaches students about protective stupidity)

Back at the Artisan for the first time in two months and closed the open mic down with a uneven set of songs that got better as the night progressed.   Tried out Can't Be What You Want Me To Be for the first time in a while.  Fucked up the chords so I kept expanding it.  I need to practice more if I'm going to play these songs on a whim.

I followed yet another dude who was rappin'.  He mentioned that he only started to do his stuff three weeks earlier.  I wished him the best of luck, he's going to need it.

Mike Moran is the former Goat singer that played at the Artisan a few years ago.  He has played harmonica on a couple songs that I did.  He's certainly is missed around these parts.

My guitar playing has taken a back seat to the drumming with Blues Rox and the Sunday Funday Jams.  I have been very lazy of not practicing the songs outside of the usual five or six that are now standard procedure songs in Stone City.  We don't have the Whittier Jam anymore, so that's one less place to showcase the Acoustic Adventures, Waubeek has been placed on hold and I pick and choose Checkers whenever time is allowed.   I haven't bothered Julie or Kimberly on the Stevie Nicks songs they sing. I haven't bothered Terry about playing guitar at the Whisky Jo's or Rumors, last time I did that at Rumors I got the switch changed on the songs that I did play.  The old guard sticks to the chords that they can play.   So I don't bother much with them.

Since moving to CR, The Artisan Sanctuary has welcomed a few more folks to play, but there has been Phil Bo not being there all that much, Stu Pershing and Sean Ster don't come to play, (probably of the fact that Stu lives around Waterloo or works strange hours and Mr. Ster's political nonsense has turned a lot of folk off, with his protective stupidity, likewise the ersatz Ryan Paul, who's willing to revolt for the sake of getting the past POTUS back into office.  Jim has been quite nice to the efforts of me and more so to Blues Rox.  I hope to continue to get back into playing more guitar but I'm not so certain of the future of the latter band.  I had thoughts of going to Davenport to check out their Tuesday Night jam but my HBP issues and being tired all the time dealing with the ongoing shoulder pain made it impossible.  And besides I took a hour nap this afternoon before coming into town and doing the Sanctuary open mic.

Eli Wedel's Frequency One Man Jam Band was before me.  A bit rough around the edges but stick with it Eli.  Everybody gets better the next time around.  I should know.  BTW, I do like the way you think.

Dave Bonham didn't make it to the open mic.  He and Julie host the Iowa City Unimpaired Bar debut Open Mic Wednesday Night and then play there Friday and then the Davenport Unimpaired Bar on Saturday.

Rumors-Tami's Birthday Bash And Other Tales Of Woe

Songs:

Running Down A Dream
She Caught The Katy
Keep Your Hands To Yourself
Cocaine
Beast Of Burden
Barefootin'

Billy Bourbon-Guitar and sings on 1,3,4
Tommy Bruner-Guitar and sings on 5
Jeff Taylor-Keyboard and sings on 2
Tim Canfield-Bass and sings on 6
Terry McDowell-Host Drummer
Tom Berdo-Harmonica
Nick Lnenicka-Harmonica 3-6
I played drums

Spending time out and about Saturday Night, I caught the Surf Zombies at Iowa Brewing Company and picked up their new album and chatted with Brookie for a while.  He's been doing his best to get me to record some songs for him.  Brook has been part of the return back into the music scene and is a total great guy.  I will record something with him next year.

Tami's birthday was Saturday, and I got to say Happy Birthday to her during the Four Day Creep final gig of 2021 at North Point, a very roomy bar, to which Mike Fleck moved over since shutting down Aces And Eights.  There has been talk that Tami would be a wonderful person to share life with, or at least get some. That's not going to happen since I've been with Julie and continue to be loyal to her.   Tami is sexy and I know she'd be fun.  She got annoyed with me after we took a photo together and I poo pooed the way I looked in the photos, I tend to be my own worst critic.   Needless to say, she was disappointed in the way things turned out that night.   Tammy from Anamosa popped up to say hi as well.    If Julie wasn't a part of my life, who knows what would happen but Tami is hardcore GOP and Trump fan.  And that would not make us a compatible couple. The other Tammy dated Mike Serbousek for a while.  I'm sure both Tami n Tammy are fun women.  Problem is they both smoke and I don't date smokers.

It was Rumors this afternoon, and Tami got another hug before we went separate ways.  I managed to stay in beat to Runnin Down A Dream (I always play it too fast) but Barefootin' was a problem since Tim plays a very slow version of it while the versions I know are Brownsville Station and mostly Pete Townsend's version from 1985.  These old legends seem to play the more slower version and somehow I have to figure out who to gradually get into their tempo.  The story of my life, too loud, too overbearing or too fast.  I can't win either way.  When you're playing with Hall Of Famers approaching seventy I can see why they slow down but to be honest, the Pete Townsend version was faster and the one that I am  more used to playing. It's hard to break away from a fast to slow version of some songs,  it cannot be helped, Barefootin' should be a  mid tempo backbeat, not a death march snare tap.

Troy Mitchell and Ian Jacoby showed up but left after the first break. Kimberly showed up later and paired up with Tim Kauffman for the final set.  DJ Hovenstot and Kimberly Kay were there.  So did Rocky Smith who got to jam with the Firegirl.  I later caught up with him at Kwik Star, to which I picked the Kwik Star that had no tea available.  Another fucking wrong Kwik Star picked  again.

By the time I got to Stone City, they were wrapping up. Dave said they had a good crowd at the beginning but when I got there they were all gone.  Carl Meiners, Mikey Frederick, Rick Wngle and Danny Trumm were there.  But I decided it was too late and didn't play any acoustic songs.  Which is just as well.

Blues Rox At Checkers

What goes wrong, will go wrong.

I haven't been the same since my bone spur in the shoulder issues and setting up the drums before, really wore me out.  Nothing like having somebody stabbing you in the heart about 100 times.  So I stumbled upon a pointless drum solo to Wipe Out, to which Kristopher's mom was long gone by then.   Kris had a bad chord and it shorted on him during the second set.

Not much to say about this performance.  By the time Kris got a better chord, we were ten minutes away from concluding this gig.  Another try at Texas Flood, Leave My Woman Alone before throwing in the towel with a tossed off Your Momma Don't Dance.

Julie and Dave were there, so was Rick Wingle and Scotty Bascom and Russ's Brother Ron with Matthew Russell. and Virginia Harlow too, she was there from the start.  Ron took the photos provided.

Russ was a hurry to get to his Cancun vacation that he forgot to take his bass guitar home. But I got it back into his procession when I was going home.

(Kristopher's Mom took this photo)

Due to technical difficulties, we didn't play Free Bird, nor Voodoo Chile, had we played the latter, it would have been the first time we played it in over a year.  having Kris play through the monitor didn't help much, in fact it hampered him on the final set.  We might have done the worst version of Rocky Mountain Way ever.  Can't Get Enough wasn't an improvement either.  The problem remains that if Brian sings these songs, it sounds like he hasn't played them since our last gig.  There was a disagreement on the chords to Rocky Mountain Way, and Russ might have picked up on that. Another problem was that Russ' bass was overpowering of trying to follow Kristopher.  Last month, when Chris Avey sat in, we were at our best.  This gig, showed us at our worst, tho we did rebounded with two blues songs and the odious Your Momma Don't Dance.  But nobody danced to our songs tonight.  We were out of it and it showed.

Cymbal lineup:

20 Inch A Sizzle Ride
16 Inch S Trash Crash
18 Inch A Medium Thin Crash (Brillant)
18 Inch K Custom Dark Crash
14 Inch K Dark Crash (Top), I4 Inch K Custom Trash (Bottom) for Hi Hats

The 18 inch Custom Dark Crash made its debut and it sounded at home better than the Medium Thin Crash.  For a budget priced cymbal, the S Trash Crash still sounds mighty good as a China sound cymbal, I think this compares to Charlie Watts' FPIP China cymbal, tho Charlie usually mixes and matches other cymbals.  I still go with either a all Zildjian or all Paiste cymbal.  The guys would love to see the 24 inch A Ride return and I'm thinking perhaps they'll get that wish at the Artisan next month.

We did do a good version of The Sky Is Crying earlier in the evening which can be found somewhere on the net, but I'm still not that impressed in the way that I played that song.
